Reply arrow not showing in Apple Mail since updating to Maverick

Ever since downloading Mavericks, I cannot see the 'Reply' arrow in Apple Mail when I reply from my iphone. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Thanks for your help.

I am so confused on what settings in Apple Mail and settings in Gmail is recommended or I should be using.

I use to have it set that when I deleted an email it would go to All Mail as in essense this is how Gmail is meant to work (I think). I'm pretty sure I did this by having the "Move deleted messages to Trash mailbox" unticked in Apple Mail but that isn't an option anymore as its shaded out. I can untick the Draft, Sent, Junk "store sent message on server" but not sure if I should be or should not being!

Anyone share what they think the best set up should be?

I'm losing my mind over here. I was using Jeff Shutte's Gmail to Mac Mail workaround fine and then Mavericks happened. It was acting wonky after that but still working for the most part. The new update screwed everything up again. Nothing was synching correctly across my Gmail, OSX or iOS devices. It may be old fashioned, but I rely heavily on the little arrows that indicate whether or not an email was reposnded to (or forwarded). Now if I respond via OSX mail, I'll see the little arrow indicating a response however, it does not show up in iOS even though the message will go from 'unread' to 'read' and the sent message appears in the 'sent' folder. A seemingly small problem that is actually quite crucical when relying heavily on both OSX & iOS email. Just to be sure, I even tried responding from Gmail on web and from Airmail and nothing was synching correctly or consistantely.

Anyone else having this problem or have any tips?

Prior to Maverick update, you wanted your Apple Mail settings to be the following:

Draft - Unchecked

Sent - Unchecked

Junk - checked

Trash - unchecked

Now, Apple has changed the settings that, from what I have noticed, you cannot uncheck draft, sent, junk or trash (you cannot change anyway). Everytime I try and uncheck these seetings, it reverts back to them being check.

Now, I am no professional on this, but the settings on your Gmail.com account should now show in your label settings what is showing in IMAP (by indicated check marks). Those settings, if checked or not, will reflect now in Apple Mail.

To me, you now should have your Gmail.com settings left alone and your Apple Mail settings left alone.

Does this help? Again, this is all from me just reading articles and playing around wih the settings in both Gmail.com and Apple Mail.

Believe me josephmarro, I feel your frustration. I rely so much on the reply arrow from both OSX and iOS and have the same problem as you. Even with the Apple udpate that came out last week, nothing has changed with the reply arrow. It did however, fix the problem with when you open an email in OSX, it now shows it open in iOS.

I wish I had some help for you, but I am in the same boat with you on trying to figure out how to get my reply arrow to work acros both OSX and iOS.

I'm going to try the "wait, hope and see" approach. right now, my mail is at least functional. hopefully this is an issue that they're aware of and can be addressed. it seems trival but so important for people who email frequently across their devices. i work & live on my email, so even the smallest function not working (like a little arrow indicating "replied") is incredibly frustrating.

Hi Lenko800

I assume your reply was for me so I thought even though this doesn't have anything to do with helping the reply arrow funciton properly I'd give you an update on what Google has emailed me in terms of recommended set up. Just FYI, prior to Mavericks I had all the boxes unticked in Apple Mail (I can't remember the setting I had in Gmail). After I installed Mavericks after all the wooha and changes I somehow ended up with exactly the recommended settings as per below. Previously (before Mavericks) I had it set up that when I pressed delete in Apple Mail it would go to All Mail, I set it up this way because thats kinda how Gmail functioned so I thought Id do the same (only prob is you accumulate A LOT of stuff). Now when you press delete it goes to Trash which gets emptied every 30 days apparently automatically in Gmail... I'm not sure if this is the way I want to go and the guys at Google also gave me a solution to keep things in All Mail when I press delete in Apple Mail. I have pasted this below also.

Not really sure how the Google Response 2 works. I've changed the settings but stuff is still going into trash so not really sure what the deal is. Ive asked them to explain to me.

Anyway - not really sure which way I want to go... to trash or not!!!

Google Response 1 (recommended Gmail/Apple mail setup)

The main recommendation that we made to our customers is to enable the All mail label from your Gmail settings. However, we have found that there are some customers experiencing issues with their Drafts automatically been saved on Draft and then sent to the trash folder. In order to fix this issue I would recommend to follow these steps:

1. Quit Mail.app.

2. Log into Gmail in your favorite web browser.

3. Click on the gear menu and select "Settings".

4. Click on the "Labels" tab.

5. Under "System Labels", next to "Drafts", click on "show if unread" and uncheck the "Show in IMAP' box.

Now disable "Store draft messages on the server":

6. Launch Mail.app.

7. Select Mail > Preferences...

8. Click on the "Accounts" button in the toolbar.

9. Click once on the account name and then click the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab.

10. Uncheck the "Store draft messages on the server" box.

11. Close the window and opt to save your changes when prompted.

Google Response 2 (Delete to All Mail)

Something you can do to automatic archive the messages you delete on the Apple mail is to access to your Gmail settings and click on the tab that says forwarding and POP/IMAP. On the IMAP options select the option Auto-Expunge off to enable the other options and select the default one that says Archive the messages. This way, even though you delete them on the client, the messages are going to be archive.
