Converting audio files in iTunes to play on iPad 4

I used iTunes 11.1.1 to convert a MPEG file to an AAC file. After the conversion, in iTunes the file kind shows "AAC audio file". The actual file extension shows .m4a when I look at it in Finder. It still will NOT sync with my iPad 4 ... why? What am I doing wrong?

I think a trip to the Apple store is in my future. If I sync with just the artist then the files can be played on my iPad. When I sync all music files it will not sync properly. The songs seem to be on the iPad but they will not play.
