Ok I like it. It isn't exactly like Facebook...the pages flip like a book....but I like it. I chose to only use Facebook with it to try it out. But u can add twitter, news feeds and blogs and read them all in one place. I like and it is easier than using the safari link for Facebook it closes all the time for me.
How did you "buy" the app. That option is never presented to me either through iTunes/App Store on my laptop or on myiPad. Every mechanism mentioned in this thread results in some variant of "this app requires a later version ..."
Thanks
If bought through iTunes on a computer it should not request a later version. It should simply download, as there is nothing to test the required version against.
Thanks for the response but I'm not sure what you are saying? One of the earlier messages in this thread said that they "Bought" the Facebook app in the store as opposed to downloading it for free. This difference, according to the poster, was what enabled the "Download an earlier version" feature. I am unable to find a way to do that. If I do anything in the iTunes store with the Facebook app my only option is to Download. Hence the question. And, by the way, the only version that it can download is the latest that requires IOS6.

The point is that you need to first buy it (for free) on a Mac or PC running iTunes. After you've done that, open the App Store application in your iPad, and you should be offered the opportunity to download the last compatible version of Facebook.
I do appreciate you answering but to be honest the simple repetition of the same instructions that didn't work before, and don't work now, isn't much help. There is no way to "buy". It's free. I can download from iTunes on my PC so I do that. I then, as you suggest, go the App Store on my iPad and I am told nothing. All apps are up to date. If I search for Facebook on the store on my iPad and install it I am told - once again - that it cannot install Facebook because I have to update to iOS 6.
Still, the iPad makes a great paperweight.
Ohh drat. They must have changed the requirements. I just tried it myself on my iPod touch (2nd generation) and got the same error. That stinks, because that method did work a few weeks ago. 😟
After you've downlaoded on iTunes on a computer, go to the Purchased tab on your iPad in the App Store App and look for it there. It should have a cloud icon next to it since its been downloaded. Once you tap on it if there is a compatible version available you should get a box saying its not compatible but asking you if you wish to download ther latest compatible version.
If you say yes to that it should download the compatible version.
That is the way it works. I've tried it myself, on my first gen iPad and it works. If you can't get it then you must be doing something wrong, and without knowing what you are seeing its hard to tell.
Note: The Apple ID being used on the computer must be the same one as on the iPad.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. That was the missing piece and Facebook is happily installing the earlier version as I write this. Truly appreciate the assistance.

I tried this solution yesterday for ALL the apps that
I could no longer access due to the upgrades and it WORKS!!!
Thank you so, so much, also on behalf of all iPad 1 users 😀
No prob, Glad I could help.
You have to open App Store and search Facebook and download.
