I suggest reading the entire thread. Direct Download does not work as the current version of Facebook cannot be installed on iOS 5 devices.

Thanks Phil0 124, but that solution does not work for me. Facebook is listed in "purcahsed" tab, but no cloud next to it. it keeps reading installing next to?

Seems to me its hung up in installation.

Try resetting your iPad first. Hold down the home and power/sleep buttons at the same time until the Apple Logo shows up. No data should be lost.

I tried as per your earlier post, but my ipad won't allow me to view purchases tab as it requires me to upgrade my ios (which it cannot)..

Huh? The Purchases Tab is a list of your past purchases. It should not require any update to view.

If you have a First Generation iPad, the why has already been explained, and options have been given in this threads.

If you don't have a first generation iPad, creating a new thread, and clearly stating what happens when you try to download it would help.

There definitely is a Facebook mobile version, it is here http://m.facebook.com and it works just great. Solved the problem for me when I bought an iPad 1 and I had no purchase history for an old app to solve the problem.

On a similar topic, this page tells you how to get around the outdated Kindle App problem by using Amazon cloud reader, http://heresthethingblog.com/2014/05/27/kindle-tip-read-kindle-book-web/ that's another great way to sort out how you can read your Kindle books on a 1st generation iPad if you have IOS5.1.1 and no purchase history to get back to an older version of the app.

If you go the App store on your iPad itself, simply download the Facebook app, and as the download begins, it will allow you to download the last compatible version (before the updates, that are no longer compatible with your iPad). Hope this helps, it worked for me!

VEry weird method But.. Darn if it didn't work! I downloaded to my pc. You can't just sync - you get the same message saying that it won't work. But, go back to your iPad, go to the app store & download & gazing!! It offers a comparable version.
