I have this problem with Safari when trying to use personnel sites as a USAF Reservist. I don't have the option of not using the sites. I have to use a CAC reader and my smart card ID to access the sites. Safari consistently ignores my ID plugged into the reader and simply asks me if I want to use that Apple ID certificate. Whether I select "Allow" or "Deny" the result is the same. Access denied and no option to use the certs on my card.

Unfortunately deleting the offending certificate doesn't work for me. Neither does removing all vestiges of apple or iCloud related sites from my bookmarks and favorites in Safari.

I can use my card semi-successfully with Chrome but due to browser compatibility issues, I can't use the controls on one of the critical websites.

How do I stop Safari from resorting to that **** certificate? Is there no way to purge the thing from the browser?

Wow... I made my previous post after hours of pain struggling to fix the problem. Once I'd vented a little I found a solution that worked for me:

The key for me was not searching for the "Apple ID...." cert, but looking for the website I was trying to access itself. Deleting that entry allowed Safari to start looking to the CAC card for certs.

Just so this may potentially help other reservists out there, the specific website was AROWS. If, after authenticating with your proper cert, you get an error saying Safari cannot display the page, STOP! Go to Develop -> User Agent -> Internet Explorer XX (whatever version you want, I use 10). The page will reload automatically and you should be into the site.
