Hi,
I have Mac Mini (late 2012 probably?, bought in 2013) with miniDP and Dell U2913WM monitor.
Option #1
- DVI cable (Dual-link) in monitor box
- DVI reduction from HDMI (in Mac box)
...but it does not support full resolution (2560px in width, only 1920).
Option #2
- cable miniDP to DP in monitor
...but this does not work - do I need to enable miniDP port somehow?

No, no way to enable/disable the Thunderbolt port (where you plug in the mini-display port adopter).
You are selecting the right input on the monitor, right?
What are you seeing on the screen? No signal?

I found solution:
Connecting DP to miniDP/Thunderbolt alone does not work, but when monitor is connected over DVI, connecting DP to miniDP and selecting DP as source on monitor creates second monitor.
Then disconnect DVI and then it works 🙂
