I'm working on creating some DVDs out of old VHS footage. What I find a disappointment is that you can no longer export to iDVD and that the export resolution is set to 120x90!!! I cannot change this. Strange and stupid. Removing features is a great way to alienate people. I would not advice Macs for video work at least not iMovie. So that is probably the real reason here: Apple wants you to buy Final Cut Pro. First they give you a decent iMovie, then they cut features and after that you are forced to buy so pro solution.

Anyway, here are some work arounds that may work for you:

- locate the DV file on your HD, after you have edited it, and use a FREE tool like Handbrake to transcode it to some (or ANY) format you want

- import the DV file straight into iDVD

- get yourself an old Mac for your video work...

For anyone interested: there are still copies of the retail iLife 09 and 11 containing iDVD available from online resellers. I am guarding my install DVDs. iDVD works with Mavericks, but not too well with Yosemite; I still use iMovie HD 06 and that works with Mavericks as well. I recently got a refurb 2012 iMac which runs ML and Mavericks and will not install a newer OS so I can continue making movies.

My take on Apple's decision to eliminate options for exports: they have eliminated built in optical drives and offer mostly/only options to share a movie online/cloud. DVD media is out - the cloud is in.

I followed the steps on the link to Apple support, selecting File or Youtube or iTunes or Email, doesn't matter which, there is NO compatibility button to see what options I can save as--BUT I found my own workaround. If I just choose to email it to myself it appears in my email attachment automatically as a Quicktime video--so I just email it to myself and save the file. But we shouldn't have to so this---Apple should have left well enough alone and I just sent them feedback saying so.😐
