iPhone 5 rear camera is not working

My iPhone 5 rear camera is not working at all. It happened out of the blue and all the sudden I just see a blurried image that gets stuck. Can anyone help me, please?

Hi Gibox,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. This article has some steps you can try if your iPhone camera is not functioning properly:

iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802

Camera isn't functioning

  1. If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
  2. If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
  3. Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
  4. Third-party cases can interfere with the autofocus/exposure feature and the flash (iPhone 4 only); try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
  5. Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
  6. Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
  7. Try to remain steady while focusing:
    • Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center. Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
    • Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. After recording begins, you cannot readjust focus until you stop recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll. Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
  8. If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

Cheers,

- Ari

I had the same issue..what happen was when I open camera its just black screen..front cam works..then i tried to use the flash it says phone is heating..wait to cool down..what I did was I dismantle the mobile using video guide..then check the ribbon point of camera is properly attached to the motherboard and found it was not properly attached. so i pulled it out and re attached..then it works fine for me..but make sure to be careful when you dismantle the mobile and removing the ribbon clips might damage to your mobile..also please don't do it if you have valid warranty with you..

This is what worked for me...

Wondering if I was alone in this camera failure, and if having a slightly loose piece of hardware is unusual, I discovered that other users on the official

Apple Discussion Forums have the exact same problem and discovered the exact same solution of physically pressing against the camera to get it working again (some users report squeezing the Camera from both sides – front and back – worked for them). The cause of this is unknown, however. Perhaps a certain production run of iPhone 5’s are vulnerable to having the camera jiggle loose over time (I’ve owned my since it was released), or perhaps the camera gets loose due to user issues like dropping the iPhone or heavy device usage, this isn’t known, but it’s certainly an interesting observation that a fair amount of users are experiencing the same thing. So, if your iPhone 5 camera seems to stop working entirely out of the blue, basically a total failure of the camera and any apps that try to access the hardware, and you think it’s dead, try this weird press trick out, then either kill all camera apps or restart the phone and try to use the Camera app again… if it works you’re likely impacted by the same issue, whatever the cause.

I finally went to the Apple Store, paid the $300 (including tax) "repair" charge and got a new iPhone 5--just 19 months after purchasing my iPhone 5 for $900 (tax included). Wow! The only solace I have is that it's hopeful that the Platinum Plus Mastercard that was used to purchase the phone has extended warranty insurance built in, and I'm hopeful that the insurance company will come through with $300 to cover the cost of the "repair". I've jumped through all their hoops and am awaiting a decision. Note: Apple doesn't actually repair the phone. They give you a "new" one. So as well as having a phone with a camera and flashlight that works, I also have a fresh new battery. Another benefit is that the newer iPhone 5 model works on a couple more radio frequencies which means that (in Canada at least) I now have the option of switching to Wind Mobile, which is far cheaper than other Canadian providers. Also the phone will work in more countries if I travel.

I've also had this problem, tried all suggestions on this forum I think with no joy. Went to Genius Bar this afternoon who told me it was hardware problem and needed new phone. As a last ditch hope started looking at any answers to problem on web and came across a YouTube clip with some replies. One guy suggested the following and hey presto my camera works again- am v happy!!

Press down hard on top right of phone on front where camera is positioned at back, then turn phone off and back on again. If doesn't work first time give it a couple of go's. Hope it works for others!

Hi Guys, pressing the camera inside does work !

I had the same problem as you and tried everything. Nothing would work.. So i went to genius, they checked and reset the cable that links the camera to the phone, but this wouldnt work either.. So they told me i need to replace the phone for 280 euros.. Which i declined.. So on my way home i thought i have nothing to loose i will press as hard as i can on the top right corner.. And it worked again ! Yeaah

still i would advise you to check first at genius before using this method..

I have tried everything, and the only thing that worked was pressing the right front top corner. But that worked for just a few days, and then, all black again. I have been waiting for a "miracle" for two weeks, but no luck! So today, finally, I got my rear camera replaced, now it's working perfectly again, I'm glad I did this, because It costed only 20$, and I have a perfect camera again after so long. 🙂

I had the same problem this week. I got this phone like 2 years ago but this is the first time I see this problem. After I tried all the solution i could find here and none of them worked but one. Tapping the rear camera with the palm of your hand (not too hard) seems to work. I believe it is because i dropped my iphone the same day the camera stopped working so maybe that is what cause this problem. After tapping my phone with my hand it worked! then i tapped it again and it stopped working again and so on, so i think that maybe something got loose when I dropped it. I hope you find this review helpful.

I just fixed mine using this method http://osxdaily.com/2014/06/22/iphone-camera-not-working-press-fix/

Exactly what I did...

Get a pen, pencil with eraser, or something else that's about the size of the camera lens.

I used a pen like this (NOT THE WRITING END!! Use the clicker end) https://www.qualitylogoproducts.com/custom-pens/the-nash-pen-superextralarge-194 815.jpg

Take off any case on the phone

Lay the phone face down (rear camera should be facing up)

Press down on the camera lens (using slight pressure) until you hear a click. The lens should pop into the hole slightly (about 1mm)

Open up the camera app and it should be working now.

My iphone5s began showing a cached blur of the selfy camera when i was trying to access the rear camera. I ordered a new rear camera for my phone (figuring that my camera was shot). when i tried to replace the camera i got as far as disconnecting my rear cameras connections only to realize that i had been shipped the wrong camera. after reconnecting (my supposed) defective camera and reassembleing by phone my camera works fine. I am assuming that re-seating my cameras connections was the fix.
