Hi Gibox,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. This article has some steps you can try if your iPhone camera is not functioning properly:

iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

Camera isn't functioning

  1. If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
  2. If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
  3. Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
  4. Third-party cases can interfere with the autofocus/exposure feature and the flash (iPhone 4 only); try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
  5. Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
  6. Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
  7. Try to remain steady while focusing:
    • Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center. Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
    • Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. After recording begins, you cannot readjust focus until you stop recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll. Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
  8. If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

Cheers,

- Ari

that simply will not work and it is not a workaround by any means. If the camera shows purple screen or purple streaks - it is done and it doesn't matter what application will use that API in iOS - iOS hands over to the app the same broken device, a rear facing camera, that is.

Take the device to a local Apple or talk to Apple representative via phone/chat. If you reset your phone and it still does the same - it is a hardware problem and it needs to be fix by Apple.

I have the same problem.. Looks like the camera app crashes. Black screen on the rear camera, sometimes the front cam works. Sometimes the screen freezes when I zwitch cams, then it shows a fuzzy image (crash while showing transition animation).

At one time the screen was black, but I was able to take pictures. The pictures on the camera roll were good! Really strange.

Did a restore, did not help. Reinstalled IOS 7.1.1 without restroing a backup. Problem remained.

Yesterday after I already resotred my backup, I did a 'reset all setting' that I read in this thread. This actually solved to problem. Both cams working again.

Today unfortunatly, it stopped working again. This really seems like a software problem.

Went to the store, iPohne is 18 moths old. Refused, no warranty anymore. Even then, I don' think it's a hardware fault.

Hope Apple will look at this. Phone without cam is unusable.

I've also had this problem, tried all suggestions on this forum I think with no joy. Went to Genius Bar this afternoon who told me it was hardware problem and needed new phone. As a last ditch hope started looking at any answers to problem on web and came across a YouTube clip with some replies. One guy suggested the following and hey presto my camera works again- am v happy!!

Press down hard on top right of phone on front where camera is positioned at back, then turn phone off and back on again. If doesn't work first time give it a couple of go's. Hope it works for others!

Here's what worked for me (twice). Same symptoms as most others. Front camera works fine, rear camera doesn't but when switching from front to rear kind of "freezes" a blurry image and then gets stuck. Other things work such as being able to slide from photo to video...sort of...but get more and more sluggish and eventually they freeze up too. This EXACT same thing happened on both my iPhone 4s and now my 5S. The first time, after trying EVERYTHING I came across online over several panic-stricken days, I finally took it to the Apple store where they determined it must be a hardware problem BUT they had no replacement in stock at that time. Took it back home (since the rest of the phone did work) left the phone plugged in with the camera on and voila. Worked fine the next day and ever since.

When the same thing happened with my iphone 5S I, once again, panicked and searched anew for a solution for several days. Occurred to me last night what worked the last time: LEAVE IT PLUGGED IN WITH THE CAMERA "ON" OVERNIGHT. I sure was a happy camper this morning. Works fine.

Even I'm skeptical that it'll work for everyone but I'd sure like to know. Can't hurt to try it the night before you head off the Genius Bar?

Momtwoalex: Curious to know if you tried downloading Awesome Camera-Live Effects from the App Store ... run that app... and then run the Camera app. That solved my problem a few weeks ago and it's still working fine. Not sure how or why it hung ... only the front camera worked with a bit of figiting... but after loading Awesome Camera, it set something free and the Camera started working.

I had the same problem... I think I figured out. It is a hardware problem, no doubt about it. HOW TO SOLVE IT?

Apply pressure over the rear lens CAREFULLY and then clean it. This will solve the poor contact the lens is making and will return back your camera.

It works fine for me... probably will fail sometimes, so you will have to apply the same pressure again...no way. I hope this works for you !

Heyo~

I found another "ghetto" fix that works almost every time for me.

Next time you encounter this problem, open the Camera app and tap on the front/back button so fast like it owes you money until blurry pictures would be almost completely black. Now close the app and reopen it. Try to switch to back camera, and it should work. It could take a little more time to start, but for me it works every time (sometimes from the second time).

Add: Sometimes it might even start working while you are still tapping on the front/back button.
