MacBook Pro Runs VERY HOT while sleeping after Mavericks update.

My MacBook Pro (2009 model) runs super hot while it's sleeping after upgrading to Mavericks. Additionally the fans run at a very high speed. This issue was not present before the upgrade.

I'm concerned that there is a bug that's going to shorten the life of my machine as it will lieterally run all night like this.

Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a solution?

Others have reported an issue with their systems after upgrading to Mavericks that might be related in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5497235

No fix is posted yet, but you might want to check to see if you have the kernel_task process using 100% CPU after coming out of sleep, and if plugging/unplugging headphones stops that task from using so much CPU.

It shouldn't be the new Power Nap feature in Mavericks, as your system appears to be too old to support it, but you should check your settings to see if it's enabled: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5394

Thanks guys I'll try the resets.

As for Power Nap, yes I don't have that on my machine as it is too old like you mentioned.

I did a quick test (short on time) and when I closed all programs it seemd to behave better.

But even if I had one program open (chrome) with only one tab open (gmail, not a video site etc), it ran hot and loud after putting it to sleep.

Hello Jaydekay,

I'm 99% sure the issue is the Google Talk plug in. I have the same problem. To alliviate it, I do this:

1) never use Chrome

2) delete Chrome entirely from your computer

3) use FireFox

4) in FireFox, effectively block the Google Talk app from working — select "ALLOW NOW" when you need to use it for things like google hangout, etc — this will effectively disable the Google Talk app

Why am I 99% sure? My MacBook never used to run hot while asleep. Then I downloaded Chrome. I fell asleep on my sofa one night around 11PM. At 3AM, I awoke to the sound of my MacBook whirring and hissing. They computer had been shut and asleep for at least 4 hours.

It turns out that Google Talk had activated itself and was chewing up a ton of data. What was it doing? I have no idea. But it clearly turned my computer on and was burning through stuff — and because the MacBook can't expel heat while it's closed shut, it was cooking my computer.

Google Talk is evil.
