Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

Good News...I am following several discussions on this topic since I am having the same issues. The post below is from another person with the trouble that has been working closely with Apple engineers.

GOOD NEWS!

I received word back today from Apple Engineering. They have confirmed that it is a bug in the iOS system that crops up when connecting to various websites.

They are working on a "fix" and it will be in the next update. No delivery date was promised.

Now we wait.

For some whose default mode is <impatience="on">waiting will be a challenge</impatience>.

Nov 27, 2013 11:54 AM in response to ethanjeffrey

If you think I am impatient because I have to "wait" for a fix for a new product that I just bought at a premium price after waiting a year for, then you are either a complete moron or, more likely, another "planted" commenter like psmythe and some others who work for Apple and have been appointed to do damage control.

I was never an Apple fan until the iPhones came out, then the retina was so awesome I got an iPad. It took a little bit, but my iPad use almost completely eclipsed my PC use.

I had an android phone, it sucked compared to the iPhone. Obviousy android was a bloated copy, thats why Apple could use less memory and slower CPU's.

But all that has changed. Apple is now copying android, making IOS a fat resource hog like android. But guess what?

When Apple copied android, they failed to bump up the memory to compensate for the bloat.

Remember when windows vista came out. It was so much more bloated than winxp that it took huge memory increases to get it up to speed.

I was rooting for BB10 for the Playbook. The QNX Kernel is among the most efficient out there. That is why it is embedded in cars and machines and factories. Blackberry had a chance to take over. They blew it. And by the way, I never liked or owned a Blackberry before the Playbook.

I guess Steve Jobs couldn't find himself a proper creative perfectionist replacement. Either that, or the corporate turds are overruling his choices. That is very possible, considering the upper management shakeup that happened awhile back when Apple dumped Steve's department picks.

Maybe it was a message from the corporate turds - "we have control now, mess with us and its curtains for you".....

If you have Apple stock... Sell sell sell......been in sell status for over a year from my perspective.

Dear zxphilxz,

Just guessing here, but I think that some/most/all find you offensive. I know I do. Because you are are offensive, I/we have trouble taking you seriously. You may even have a valid point, but you are so offensive as to be easily ignored. You talk like a Samsung troll.

Regarding the 1gb of RAM, again just guessing here, but I think that it has to due with more RAM uses more power. Fully optimized software will allow for less RAM. Apple is going for all day battery life.

This is not WinPC with 16gb of RAM and two hour battery life.

Do we all wish that the iPad Air had 2/4/8/more gigs of RAM? Yes

Does it really need more RAM? Perhaps or maybe iOS/Safari need to be optimized.

My friend with the new iPad Retina Mini has NO problem with crashes, so it is not every device.

You have no choice but to defer. Memory may use more power, but not that much. And, yes I tend to get ****** OFF when I take a leap of faith, sell my top end iPad 4 at a loss so I can "upgrade" only to actually get a much worse product. So YEAH, I'm offended, and I am going to make my feelings known. If I were you, I would try to speak in the first person only. No one elected you spokesman.

I am committed to no company. I don't own any samsung products. Most companies are copying Apple, Samsung included, because they were the best. Now the corporate turds running Apple have their heads in the sand, so they are copying the copiers.

I have no allegiance to any company. I welcome competition. When something better comes out, I drop what I have and run to it.

Unfortunately corporations despise competition. Look at all the other products and companies, swallowing up every small original business that enters the market.

Decline of western civilization, indeed.

I have 10 apps open, two of them are safari and chrome. Each browser has at least ten tabs open. The other two are graphic intensive games and some other random ones I opened. My memory manager states that I have around 113 MB left with no crashes. I will keep monitoring the air, as I stated this is after the full restore as a new device. This is not a fix by any means but it does tell me that it could be a software bug rather than physical memory. My wife has the iPad 4, hasn't been upgraded to 7.0.4, and has not had the issue.

But she did upgrade her iPhone 5 to 7.0.4 and she gets the respring issues and crashes, so it seems to not have anything to do with the 64 bit architecture.

My ticket is still open with support and they state they are looking into the issue and based on some of the comments here we should see something soon, hopefully. They told me to go to the store and exchange for a new one, but to me it is not a hardware thing so no need to go and get a new air.

I will say that if for some odd reason it turns out to be a physical memory issue and they release an updated iPad air with 2 gigs of memory I will be highly upset. I don't want to have this one and have to sell it and pay for the upgraded model. I wish they would come out and state what the issue is so I can know if I need to return this one or not.

Zxphilxz,

Although I respect and agree with your loathing of companies run by the "bean counters", I am not convinced that Apple is in that state. I sense that Jony Ive is in full control of the engineering side. And though Tim Cook is no Steve Jobs, he does appear to have a clue. I have no special knowledge, just what I read.

tone7888's post above certainly indicates the the problem is not pandemic. If it occurred with more than a small fraction of the devices it would be all over the news. Still hundreds of problematic devices (out of millions) is still frustrating if it is you device. My friends and associates with Retina Minis and iPad Airs do not report these problems.

Nov 27, 2013 2:59 PM in response to tone7888

Still no crashes or resprings but I did notice that at 3:06 my diagnostics reported a low memory error, my iPad didn't crash but I'm sure the memory was low during that time. So I'm thinking this error has nothing to do with the crashes it's just reporting that the memory is low. I'm hopeful this can be fixed with an OS update but that little voice in the back of my head keeps saying, watch in January or anytime during the first quarter, they will introduce a 2 gig iPad air, hopefully not.

Nov 27, 2013 3:21 PM in response to Data Wrangler

I have an iPad Air, and I can report these problems with it. The problems also occur on my iPhone 5 and iPad 2. So if it's only hundreds of devices out of millions, I'm unfortunate enough to be saddled with three of those devices. The two older devices served me well before iOS 7, so I'm still inclined to blame iOS 7 rather than the devices.

Anyway, another poster has indicated that Apple tells him that they have determined that iOS 7 is indeed the culprit and are working on a fix. So an end may be in sight.

Nov 27, 2013 6:20 PM in response to Tulkinghorn

I have to wonder if it is due to poor coding/testing of the 32 bit / 64 bit libraries/forks/branches. Not excusing, not by any means, just wondering. My wife's iPad 3 is OK at iOS 7.0.3, but I fear making the jump to 7.0.4 until the root cause is understood.

I am less concerned the fact that it slipped through than I am with how quickly Apple resolves and fixes. The were pretty quick fixing the iWorks crash problem ... which I did experience.

Nov 27, 2013 6:33 PM in response to Data Wrangler

I've loved everything about my air since I got it on launch day except for the occasional crash. The crashes have gotten worse so I decided to check this forum hoping to find it was an isolated issue that maybe could be fixed by exchanging my faulty ipad for a new one but now it's clear this is a widespread issue. I've updated but now worry that it's a hardware issue since the updates have not fixed it yet. I waited a long time before upgrading, extremely disappointed and starting to wonder why I bother with apple anymore.
