Time Capsule set-up

I recently purchased my first TC. I have wireless internet in my home. When I connected the TC, a new wireless network was established. I am able to start the back-up of my computer by clicking on the newly established wireless network, but am then unable to access the original wireless network in order to do anything else. Is it true that I will not be able to use my wireless network for anything else while a back-up is occurring or did I do something wrong during the set-up process? REALLY, REALLY hoping I did something wrong. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I hope I selected the appropriate tag for this question. If not, please let me know.

In case it matters, I actually have OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5, not 10.8.3.

The TC is not made to be used with wireless internet. It is really a pain as Apple have made next to no provision for it to be used other than by ethernet.

There is a join a wireless network mode.. unfortunately the airport utility is prone to bungle this, and you have no choice on the latest AC model but to try try try again. The TC should be able to join your existing wireless network, and exist as a wireless client on the network.. with the following caveat emptor..

1. The TC will now be super slow.. all packets are passed via the existing wireless network to the TC.

2. The TC will stop having any use.. it is now a dumb client.. your fancy AC wireless is reduced to client at whatever speed the wireless router is working at. The ethernet ports are turned off.

3. You will overwhelm the network when you do backups as the bandwidth provision from the wireless internet router will be too slow. And without QoS to push background backups to where they should be.. background. All clients will be affected.. pushing bulk backups over wireless is a bad idea.

4. If the wireless internet is not in your hands.. ie the router is outside your home.. do not do it this way. They will have it setup to specifically limit your usage.

We strongly recommend an avoid at all costs.. this is a lousy poor setup.

In your profile which you have informed us is wrong.. do you actually have a Mac Pro.. if so, keep the TC in router mode and use ethernet. Tell us the details because I have written it up a few times.

eg https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30

The TC btw in this setup is the wrong product.

Or if you can get a wireless router with ethenret ports, there are plenty of wireless routers around that take 3G/4G wireless sticks directly or even the SIM.. then you can bridge the TC to it.. far superior to using a wireless hotspot type product.

The TC is in complete isolation to the existing wireless network.. as indeed it is now.

Instead of using wireless plug it in by ethernet to the computer.

See the other thread for details of what you need to do to fix gateway issues. But as long as wireless is top of the network listing then it should solve some of the problems.. but long term you do need to manually set gateway.

Since we are wireless, how do I connect the TC to ethernet?

Sorry but the question.. ?? the internet wireless and the TC have nothing to do with each other. .

Plug TC into computer with a 1M long patch lead.. it is a dumb network disk.

Since you are not sharing the TC as a network backup drive.. which you cannot do since you have wireless internet.. then plug an external hard disk into the computer..

The worst possible is USB2. But it is by far the cheapest .. if you have a brand new pro, they should have USB3 which is a big step up.. for older ones FW800 is much better than USB2.. and thunderbolt the best by far. On a pro you can buy an esata card.. or indeed use another hard disk in the machine for TM backups. esata is excellent.. cheap and fast and no conversion from sata to esata is needed. It is merely a port for longer length cables.

BUT note.. even USB2 is faster, and more reliable for TM than gigabit to TC.. due to the processor limit of the drive speed.

There is another way.. USB wireless dongle.. that is Mac compatible.

I do not recommend it.. but if you wanted to do backups to the TC in a remote location in the house a second wireless network can be established by using a second wireless client.

You can do the same thing of course using an express for instance as wireless bridge to ethernet.

Slow is the name of the game though.
