From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Websigte Data
Now select the Advanced tab and select: Show Develop menu in menu bar
Click Develop > Empty Caches
Quit and relaunch Safari. Login to your Gmail account then logout.
These steps do not solve the problem, even if they do brute force log you out of Google's accounts.
It seems to be an issue unique to (at least) Safari 7, where the links for Google+ (or email, if one doesn't have a Google+ account) no longer work. A popout should appear with the signout option, but under Safari, it does not.
Google points to Apple for a solution, Apple points to Google, however, the functionality does work in Chrome and Firefox for Mac.
If one needs to log out to swap accounts with Google in Safari until this is resolved, there's a simpler solution -- follow this link:

Thanks!
I agree with the complaints above. Clicking on the profile photo in gmail gives no response using Safari in Mavericks. It worked fine before when I was using Snow Leopard. If I login to gmail using Firefox, clicking on the profile photo gives me the option to signout as expected so this is definitely a glitch in Safari. I can indireclty signout of gmail in Safari if I login from Firefox and then click on 'Details' and select 'Sign out of all other sessions'. This logs me out in Safari but it's not an acceptable solution. I hope this gets fixed soon.
I know this doesn't solve anything, that we will have to leave to Apple and Google, but u can still log out from your google account form youtube - it's easier and quicker than deleting cookies. Then just go back and sign in with a different account.
Another way (which works for me) is to extend the dafari windows to full screen. Weird...isn't it?
That's so weird. This issue is really annoying, and so not the type of basic glitch you expect from Apple's premiere web browser. Sort it out!
Funy fix for a funny problem while looking for another one:
I was pi$$ed up by my battery life, so I tried that:
http://www.imore.com/how-resolve-battery-life-troubles-your-retina-macbook-pro
guess what...now my change profile link works with a non full-screen window!!!
It works man! Funny solution for this gmail logout problem... thanks!
Wow...that actually worked for me, too!
Even Google help failed to suggest that...As did other Mac help lists.
Thanks!
It's not a real "fix", but it sure beats having to revert to using the older format that lacks all the usefulness of modern Gmail.
Thanks for this. And I don't even have an Macbook Pro but an iMac. I did the terminal 'fix' and after that, the little icon that displays my photo is clickable and can be used to logout, etc.
amazing how simple a solution can be sometimes, despite how ridiculous it is.
THANK the lord i found you lot! I couldnt log out after getting Mavericks and it been driving us nuts as both me and my boyfriend have gmail...anyway thanks to the full screen i will now get to sleep. Thanks muchly zzz
Only 'killall Dock' in Terminal solved my problem.
That worked... Super weird.
I can confirm that works too
