I am planning to purchase the new iPad Mini with Retina Display when it comes out this month. I am curious to know whether it will fit into the older iPad Mini cases that are currently available. I wasn't sure whether I should go ahead and buy a case, or if I should wait due to a size difference. Thanks!

The iPad mini Retina will be the exact same dimensions as the mini with the exception of the depth (mini: 0.29 inch (7.5 mm) vs. mini Retina: 0.28 inch (7.2 mm) which likely will not matter as far as cases go.

The old iPad mini case will fit new iPad mini. However, the new iPad mini has 2 microphones and the 2nd microphone located on the back. (old iPad mini only had 1 microphone). That means, the old case will cover the 2nd microphone.

He wouldn't be buying the "old" one unless he purchased something that a 3rd party supplier had in stock. Apple isn't selling the "old" case any longer. I assumed that was clear in my post because I was talking about Apple's store. Perhaps not.

I had a black mini SmartCase on order at the time I posted the above. Although my mini-retina won't arrive for a couple of weeks the case arrived today. I has the cutout for the rear microphone just as shown in the images on the Apple Store.
I just bought an iPad Mini case for my iPad Mini with Retina Display, and it DOES NOT FIT... This particular case has a hard plastic cradle for the iPad to fit into and it does not wrap around the edges enough to hold it in... I am shocked at how snug these cases will fit, even though there is only a 0.01" difference in thickness... So again, I repeat, an iPad Mini with Retina Display WILL NOT FIT into the first gen iPad Mini case!

I'm not sure which case you have but my experience is different from yours.
My 128GB AT&T mini Retina was just delivered. The first thing I did after opening it was place it in the Apple mini Smart Case I purchased for it. It fits perfectly. No problems at all.
Will the new iPad Mini with Retina Display fit into the older iPad Mini case? (Will it be the same size?)
