I agree..."Only Apple! Who else would have an upgrade that has trouble opening its own documents?"

I downloaded Pages 5.1 and absolutely hate it! I can't open any documents created in their previous Pages program...like everything that I ever created prior to yesterday to the beginning of my life on a computer! I really, really need my documents so the only solution that I can think of so far is to go on eBay and try to buy the prior version because you can't get it from Apple anymore.

Its killing me too!

This is simply not true, because if you created a document in pages 4.0 a year ago, when you right click on the file now and ask it to 'open with' pages (default) 5.2, all you get is an error message that says "The document 'whatever' couldn't be opened". I have called Apple tech support and they have confirmed this. To date there is NO WAY to open your old documents without exporting it into a pdf form. Then you have to convert it from PDF to a viable Pages 5.2 file.

What I've found as a workaround is to open the newer document in the iCloud version of Pages, export that as a Word document, drag that off the iCloud document window that opens in the Desktop version of the old Pages, onto your desktop, open THAT in the old version, then export that as Pages again... will save it in the older version.

A bit of a runaround, but at least you don't lose anything. Then, be careful not to save any changes if you open that again on your iPad or iPhone (or, I suppose, in iCloud) - instead, make a copy. The original document should remain workable in the earlier, preferred version.

My file wasn't 4 years old. It was created in the last 6 months and I was unable to open it despite the fact that the pages upgrade was pushed down to my mac. When I tried to open my file, apple sent me to the website to buy pages at $19.99 which isn't right since apparently the mac was already running pages 5.2. Hence the pages default work around.

You won't be able to edit the old Pages document but if you right click on the document in Finder you can select Open With and then select Preview. This will open the document in the Preview app. You can select the entire content of the document by going to the Edit drop down menu and selecting "select all." Conversely, you can use Command A while your cursor is in the body of the document. Copy the contents and then paste it in the latest Pages. The pasted contents will retain the same formatting as in your original document. Save this Pages document and then you can start working on your document.

I think you are just confused by what is going on.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

You are alternately opening the wrong versions.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them.

Pages 5 can not open Pages '08 files at all. To open Pages '08 files in Pages 5 export them from Pages '08 to Word .doc/x files, or open and resave them in Pages '09.

Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
