Why are the old core 2 duo macs faster?

Can someone please tell my why the old macs are faster than then new ones?

I had a white macbook from 2008. It was screaming fast. Fast forward to my 2011 MacPro Quad core and its actually quite slower in comparison to the Core2due from 2008.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

The OS is never irrelevant. It is always runnig on the computer and using system resources. So I have no idea what you are referring to when you say the OS is irrelevant.
