Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 13'' Wifi Issues

My new MBPR's wifi is very slow and constantly drops the connection, although it is showing that it is always connected. If I restart the computer it fixes the problem for a little bit then it starts again. I have a 2012 Macbook Pro on the same network with no isseues, and I will have to use it sometimes just to be able to browse the web. Is there any way to fix the issue on the new Macbook?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Wanting to upgrade to the Retina 13" MBP so I could get AC and 16GB Ram. Now thinking it would be smarter to stay with my 2012 Air until this is resolved? Does this happen even with new Time Capsule with AC? How widespread is the problem?

It can happen with a Time Capsule, it did for me as I mentioned earlier (p. 33) with 10.9.1 on a 15" rMBP. I was cured both by the beta and the since released 10.9.2 upgrade. Mine should be a fairly recent a production, I bought it less than a month ago and it had to be ordered for me.

Hello all, I have been struggling with this wifi issue since I got my machine. I tried the beta driver off this thread back before 10.9.2 came out but it made it worse so I reverted. Since the 10.9.2 official update came out it has been about the same, this is all background...

I want to bring up what seems to have fixed the issues for me, at least for the most part, now the worse case I just need to click on the wireless network I want after waking from sleep(this might be because I was on a different network then when the machine was last awake). But anyway, I have stable pings now and everything seems happy.

In my troubleshooting trying to get things working i discovered that when I tried to add a new network location then close the settings window and re-open it that everything would revert to defaults. So this hinted at a permissions problem.

I then used the "disk utility" to repair permissions on my drive, and noticed that some files would appear in the list regardless of how many times it was "repaired". Something about ACL permissions found but not expected...

So then I ran "

sudo chmod -RN <Path>

on each file/directory that showed up in the list, then after another repair(it will remove ACL permissions from some files that need them) that will re-add them. Most of my issues seemed to be resolved. *sudo only required for some files, advised not to be used unless you get a permissions/file not found error

This issue may be restricted to my machine due to having to using the Apple migration software.

I hope this helps someone else,

Kyle

Edit: I should mention that this was on a 15 inch MBPr but the issues seem to effect both 15 and 13 inch models

hey, what transfer speeds do you get with the time capsule?

My Airport Extreme was only 10-15 MB/s.

Transmit rate is usually between 700-1050 (from the airport menu) when I'm sitting about 2 m from the Time Capsule. For something real world, I just dumped a 2.05 GB ISO onto the Time Capsule, it took 1 min 35 sec.

I have an ac Airport Extreme on the network, but I haven't tested that. Should be fairly similar since it's extending the network via ethernet.

2.05 GB in 1min 35s means 20 MB/s, which is pretty bad for 802.11ac, but its the best Mavericks can do ( i went up to 23 MB/s with my Netgear, still pretty bad)

In Win 8.1 it does constant 45 MB/s, also SMB works much smoother, quick folder display etc. World of a difference.

Well, you made me test again. Just tested three more times, it's now dumping that 2.05 GB in 1 min 15 sec. Eeking out a few more MB/s.

That lower first run was probably because someone in the house was watching something on YouTube while I was testing...doh! 😁

I'm content enough with throughput in my setup at the moment, certainly it's not bad enough for me to want to install and actually use Win 8.1. We have some Win 8 tablets at work -- they were free -- and I find it pretty much unusable. I haven't used SMB in awhile, do use CIFs to a Netapp filer at work. I can't say I've noticed much difference between Mountain Lion and Mavericks. Win 7 though probably does it faster, although I try not to use that unless I have to.

i understand, 25 MB/s is acceptable, but then again we are talking about a MacBook Pro, which should perform in the upper segment of current hardware, no?

SMB is the standard protocol that the Mac will use to access files on a Server/NAS, so if you want to use anything like this, you will have to use SMB.

I like the dual boot quite well, its somehow the best of both worlds. Im not a fan of Win 8.1, but it actually is quite good at some things.
