Kernel Task is using CPU and slowing down MacBook massivly

Hey,

updated to Mavericks but sadly my MacBook is running very slow now. I checked the Activity Monitor and my CPU is fully or sometimes almost fully used the kernel_task process...

Now I looked around and found that many have the problem but not many have a fix to it!

What can I do to get my MacBook to at least normal speed (its way slower then before and I was told Mavericks will make the Computer faster and more Battery Efficient).

Please let me know how I can constantly fix it...

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

  1. There's not much that's suspicious on your report.
  2. Interesting that it's a kernel task that is running away with your CPU- did you recently uninstall a kernel extension?
  3. I'd try:
    1. uninstall the Google Keystone agent HOWTO: Remove Google Software Update on Mac OS X - Raam Dev
    2. Try a safe boot (restart, hold down shift until you see the Apple logo). This does some diagnostic testing and then starts up without third-party added on software. If this eliminates the symptom, then you know the problem is with the third-party software. A safe boot doesn't fix anything, but it tells you where the problem is. Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? Then it would be trial and error to remove the third party software item that is causing the problem. But again, you don't have much that's suspicious there.
    3. Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
    4. if none of that fixes it, I'd bite the bullet and do a clean install: backup your documents, erase your HD, and reinstall Mavericks from scratch.

CleanMyMac is crapware. Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall. I would try to uninstall it and see if that improves things.

If not, then CleanMyMac has probably damaged your OS beyond a simple repair. I would back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean install (not from migration and not from a backup, but to install Mavericks and your apps from scratch).

Hi Arthur,

I am having a really similar problem - my kernal_task is using over 300% CPU, my mac's fan is running, and everything is working really slowly. I used your advice to run an etrecheck, and the report is below. I would be most appreciative for any suggestions on how to fix this!

If the safe boot runs better then figure out which of the Startup Items/Daemons/Agents is responsible by trial and error. See if you can uninstall the app that is responsible, restart, and check your performance.

  2. If the safe boot does not run better, then the problem is with OSX itself, which is what I'd suspect. (You don't have any kernel extensions but it would appear that something in your kernel is damaged and is running away with CPU usage. Maybe you had something installed previously that altered the kernel. MacKeeper and CleanMyMac are notorious for this.) In that case:
    1. Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery

    2. if that doesn't fix it, I'd backup your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean reinstall of Mavericks (which means completely from scratch, no migration, and no reinstalling the system from a backup).

then when you reinstall your apps, you can do so one at a time, making sure they are all necessary, and up-to-date and compatible with Mavericks, and assess your performance after each one.

I seem to be having the same problem, my trackpad only works now in safeboot mode.

You need to uninstall CleanMyMac. How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of Mac Apps

But: CleanMyMac can damage your OS, so even if you uninstall it, it may not fix the problem. The damage may still be there even if you uninstall it. Then the only fix is to erase your HD and do a new, clean reinstall of Mavericks.

CleanMyMac is crapware.

Crapware is anything that says it will "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac.

massterduck wrote:

All crapware is unnecessary on Macs.

Crapware will slow down and screw up your Mac.

You do not need any crapware on your Mac.

Macs can take care of themselves.

Do not install crapware on your Mac.

  1. You might need more RAM. I know the specs for Mavericks say 2 GB, and you have 4, but 4 is probably a more realistic minimum, and you might need more than the minimum.
  2. I can't really comment too much on your report. Nothing really jumps out at me. Could be any of your background items (the kernel extensions, daemons, agents, and so on.)
  3. Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode
  4. I would:
    1. Figure out what the apps are that are installing all those background processes.
    2. Uninstall the ones you can live without.
    3. Make sure the others are all up to date and compatible with Mavericks.
    4. The other option is to backup your documents, erase your hard drive, and do a clean install of Mavericks. Then you can reinstall your apps, avoid apps you don't need, and check your Mac's performance after each app that you install.
