Kernel Task is using CPU and slowing down MacBook massivly

Hey,

updated to Mavericks but sadly my MacBook is running very slow now. I checked the Activity Monitor and my CPU is fully or sometimes almost fully used the kernel_task process...

Now I looked around and found that many have the problem but not many have a fix to it!

What can I do to get my MacBook to at least normal speed (its way slower then before and I was told Mavericks will make the Computer faster and more Battery Efficient).

Please let me know how I can constantly fix it...

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hello,

I too am having problems with the kernel_task. I would very much appreciate if Arthur, you could have a look at my EtreCheck as I don't have enough knowledge to read it and figure out what's wrong. But, if you had a pound for everytime someone asked you this on this thread you'd be rich! So no biggy if you're sick of it!

But, by doing the EtreCheck I unearthed another heavy task for my RAM which I don't know how to get rid of.

That is the mds_stores, which apparently has to do with spotlight. The weird thing with this is that the activity monitor says it uses 102.7MB but EtreCheck says it uses 1.23GB! Is that even possible?

Please can someone have a look and advice on what I can do to make my computer faster. I've been trying to render on FCP this morning and it tells me it's out of memory! This has only started happening after I installed Mavericks. I have 10GB of memory. I must be doing something wrong! Please, a mac doctor, advise. Thank you

Sorry Scott, this thread has gotten very messy with threadjacking. You might have better luck (and better answers) with starting a new thread of your own.

  1. Not too much to comment on with your report either. Try a safe boot (restart, hold down shift until you see the Apple logo). If your mac runs faster, then it’s one or another of the background processes. Vmware fusion would be my bet; OS emulation is very memory hungry. If you need to run Windows on your machine then there are other options that might not slow it down so much:
    1. install Windows on a separate partition with bootcamp Mac Basics: Using Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp
    2. use Wine or Crossover to run a PC program without Windows WineBottler | Run Windows-based Programs on a Mac Run Windows on Mac and Linux, easily and affordably - CodeWeavers
    3. or try one of the other commercial emulators like Parallels Virtualization and Automation Solutions for Desktops, Servers, Hosting, SaaS - Parallels
  2. repairing your HD and permissions is worth a shot: Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
  3. was there some other software that you previously had on your Mac that you have uninstalled- for example CleanMyMac? This could have damaged your OS but wouldn’t show up on a current Etrecheck report.
  4. if none of that works, then I'd bite the bullet and do a clean install: back up your documents and settings, erase your HD, and reinstall Mavericks from scratch (not from a backup).

Hi!
I have the same problem with kernel_task.. it's eating all my cpu. The fan does 6200 rpm although the temperature is not above normal. It's happening the first half hour after I've started the computer or waked it up from sleep mode. For example, right now it works fine, fast and with no problems at all.

I have tried (everything?),
-erased the drive
-reinstalled os x
-reset smc
-reset pvram
-restarted in safe mode

I have mavericks now but experienced the same problem with os lion. This problem might have occured when I started to use an external screen, but I'm not sure.

This is my diagnostics. Arthur, if you are not tired to death buy these reports already, I would be extremely grateful if you could read it and maybe help me a little bit. Thank you!

Any help or guidance would be appreciated!

Feb 18, 2014 8:48 PM in response to radahartmann

Hello Arthur,

I have a question....I have tried all your steps you have offered everyone and I have removed everything my computer that you had requested others to do. After doing so, my computer started running much better. I wish I would have read these posts before I almost screwed my mac up, but luckily its not trashed.

My question is, I still have 1 piece that is showing "CleanMyMac2" and I am curious how you think I might be able to get rid of it without doing a clean and fresh reinstall. I have followed all the steps and got rid of all parts of it but this 1 line doesnt seem to want to go away. Also, I had installed McAfee on my mac and dowloaded it from my college software store. The uninstaller never showed up on my mac and I have tried to get rid of the enitre (it slows my computer down DRASTICALLY) thing but the icon still stays in the top right of my bar and "vshieldscanner" and a few other pieces still show up in my activity monitor. It allows me to quit them but as soon as I do, they turn right back on. If you have time do you think you could give me some advice also?

I have made the parts that just wont seem to leave my computer in BOLD and underlined and bullets as well....please, any help would be greatful.

Thank you,

Ryan

You are welcome, happy to help.

I'd try:

  1. Make sure you have a backup first.
  2. For McAfee, if you haven't already, look at How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac and see if you can find the uninstaller they talk about. If not, I'd contact McAfee and see if they'll send it to you.
  3. Ditto for CleanMyMac2, look at How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of Mac Apps and use their uninstaller if you haven't already.
  4. If you've done that already then you've got to do some digging. For kernel extensions, look in
    1. /Library/Extensions
    2. /System/Library/Extensions
    3. Note that /Library is not the same thing as ~/Library. ~/Library is hidden by default. If you are not familiar with this, or how to make ~/Library unhidden, then perhaps a clean install (see below) would be a better idea.
  5. For the Daemons and Agents, this is going to be more problematic, but you could look in
    1. /Library/Preferences and
    2. ~/Library/Preferences.
    3. Problematic because Mavericks handles preference files (= .plist files) in a new way, and they are cached. Getting rid of the dysfunctional .plist files may be difficult. I am not sure where to look for the caches where they are kept. If you just try to remove them from the folders I listed above, they will still be cached and still active. I have been looking for a clear answer for how to do this, but I haven't found one yet. There are two articles from Topher that address this, How to tackle defaults not sticking in Mavericks | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews and How to manually edit defaults plist files in Mavericks | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews . The process involves killing the cfprefsd process in Activity Monitor, which is the process that writes the .plist file into the cache, and then deleting the original .plist file. Maybe.
  6. Another issue is that CleanMyMac is notorious for damaging the OS, so even if you delete the background processes the damage is already done.
  7. If I were you I'd cut to the chase and just do a clean reinstall:
    1. backup your documents
    2. I like to make an installer flash drive with DiskMaker X DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker)
    3. boot from the flash drive and completely erase the entire internal drive
    4. install Mavericks from the flash drive
    5. reinstall your apps from scratch (not from a backup), and finally your documents. That's a good opportunity to clean out other junk you don't need and don't use.
  8. Then your mac will be very fast and very reliable.

Hello Arthur, i have to admit that u are very kind and helpful. Seldom people will answer different people in the same post, but u did. So My mac has some problem, not about slowing or fan control , i don't know what it was but my mac cannot run final cut pro x smoothly. It was a crap when it runs. first it takes up my cpu for 80.6 % (the highest record in using it). Second, is the screenflow which i do record stuffs and it eats my disk for 100GB(the image below will explain) Third, is there a good ways to replace kernel? becasue i have overcome 3 kernel panics in my macbook's life. I will now post the etrecheck and the disk inventory x screenshot which if u guys had heard about it:

By The way i was exporting my screenflow file so u can maybe see the usage when i export things

Arthur,

Can you give me some advice as well? My fan runs all the time and my computer is much slower than it should be. It's not a death crawl, but I don't know how to remove things or what to remove without messing up my system. I'm a first timer here.

Hi would you have a look at my etrecheck information. I am trying to get my computer to work better. I've already uninstalled KeepMyMac with zapp app but I see it's still there and a bunch of things I probably should get rid of but don't really know how...like those start up applicactions. As to the Time Machine. I have a 1TR time machine. It used to back up my old computer. It hasn't worked properly since I got this mac (over 2 years ago) and I can't figure out how to erase the content of the time machine and start anew. As you can see I'm a bit of a neophyte. Thanks for your help.

Use this at your own risk. It worked for me.

Basic Procedure:

1- Click in the apple logo on the upleft corner, select "About This Mac".

2- Click in "More Info".

3- Click in "System Report".

4- Take note of "Model Identifier".

5- Create a new folder called "Recovery_Kernel_Task".

6- Select Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

7- Click the mouse right button at that file and select "Show Package Contents"

8- Open the folder Contents/Resources.

9- Look for the Model Identifier in step 4.

10- Move the file to the folder you've created, if you need to restore the file.

11- Check the folder in step 8 has 49 files instead of 50 (original files).

12- Restart the computer and be happy!
