Interesting, Apple just removed my post because they claim it involved "jailbreaking iOS" when in fact it was neither iOS nor jailbreaking or modifying iOS in any way. It's completely unrelated to iOS!

It's not even modifying Mac OS-X, it's simply using an older version of Apple's own frameworks (leaving the current one intact!).

Since this is a very workable solution to a issue that affects a lot of users, perhaps the mods can chime in here as to why this solution is unacceptable for the forum?

I don't think that I've ever seen the mods "chime in" on any of the community support forums. But, anything is possible, I suppose.

The software that you are likely asking about requires that a user override the setting about an "unknown author" for the software, and also requires that you change some security settings on your Mac to allow the software to run.

The software "author" has included notes on his site explaining why Apple is removing links that appear on Apple sites, if you care to read that.

As far as iOS, I would imagine that a typo was the result when the mod typed iOS when they meant to enter OS X. Just a guess.

My solution took this form. While it is true that you cannot configure an old Airport Express 1084 from Mavericks, once properly configured it is perfectly useable including Airplay. I initially configured my 1084 using an older Mac laptop I had (I hardly ever throw anything away) running 10.6.8 and Airport Utility 5.6.1. The wireless worked fine, however I struggled for some time to get Airplay to work from my Mavericks Macbook Pro through the 1084. In frustration/desperation I decided to look at the 1084's configuration again just to see if I missed a setting, or something. This time though, I fired up another old PC laptop I had lying around with Windows XP on it. I downloaded Airport Utility version 5.5.3 AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows. As soon as this version of Airport Utility recognized my AE it scanned it and notified me that a firmware update for it was available. Voila! Updating the firmware did the trick, duh. Airplay works with Mavericks, and I'm now a happy camper. I didn't revisit the Airport utility from my other old Powerbook, but it hadn't said anything about the firmware update. Anyway, I hope this helps others here.
