Losing network or internet connection after sleep/wake

I've created this as a new thread as it seems to be more prevalent with Mavericks and the very last update to ML but the problem has been around a while. It does seem to affect all types of Mac though from the other threads I have read and posted to.

The problem is essentially this: Intermittently, after a system sleep, the Mac appears to have no network connectivity (local and internet) and for a while the only reliable solution was to force the renewal of the DHCP lease or turning WiFi off and on again, after which the network would be restored.

There have been several theories postulated and a number of fixes, such as the DHCP renew, suggested but none of them have lasted for long but I now think I have this fixed as the following been 100% stable on my Mac Pro with wired ethernet connection for the last two weeks with no recurrences. I see no reason why this would not work on other Macs or connection types.

The problem seems to lie in the automatic location setting in the network settings, so here's what I did...

  1. Network settings - Location - Edit Locations
  2. Add a new location .. "Home" for example
  3. With home selected, click the cogwheel below the network services and choose "Set Service Order"
  4. Reorder the services so your preferred connection type is at the top
  5. After that, select each service in turn (assuming you have a few - like Bluetooth PAN etc)
  6. Make the services you are not using inactive
  7. Apply

Please post a reply if this works for you - it's been dragging on far too long and needs sorting out by Apple but if this is a good workaround for people then it will certainly do for now.

To summarize what I have found so far:

Issue is that wifi drops after wake from sleep, and also that it drops randomly while surfing/idle

Issue is happening on OS Mavericks MBA and MBP (may also exist on Lion and Mountain Lion)

Issue is happening on on wifi (may also exist on ethernet connections)

Issue may be also related to wifi router, but some users have successful connections to other apple products including ipad, ipod, etc and windows laptops

Issue has been reportedly resolved using Reforgers method (post 1 of this thread) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5537854?start=0&tstart=0

Issue has been reportedly resolved by turning off Bluetooth completely (or by just turning off Bluetooth PAN)

Issue has been reportedly resolved by turning off iCloud services

Please give apple feedback!

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

100K people have read this and other threads, if all of them leave a quick feedback maybe apple will fix/respond. Even if a temporary fix works it is not a full solution and apple should push an update

Thanks!

This worked in my case and it makes sense too. This problem started when I connected my phone via bluetooth as a phone modem. Since then when the bluetooth was on it looks for the phone first after waking and would never get to the wifi connection. Turning the wifi off/on was the only way to get the wifi to connect.

This solved the problem. Nice work!

My issue started when I used the apple bluetooth mouse. I am unable to connect to wifi after sleep/reboot. Only way to resolve it is to off/on wifi. I have set the "Service Order" for wifi to be the first one (as its currently set second only from Bluetooth PAN). I have made "Thunderbolt Bridge" as Inactive and deleted "Bluetooth PAN" as I only use usb cable when using my phone as modem. So far I have restarted my computer twice and manually set it to sleep and no issue so far with my wifi and apple mouse. I will post here if I encounter further issues.

I have been following this thread for awhile and we are creating confusion for every new person that reads this thread. When they go to the last pages, to get the latest info they just see a lot of confusing info. They are seeing alot of suggested fixes, trying them and they dont work, or they do work, but there are so many suggestions that no one knows what to try. So I have a proposal. Lets do this right. Copy and paste this post. If you try one of the suggestions and it works for you, bump up the "success count", if it doesn’t bump up the failure count. Because when multiple people have something working we can have confidence it should work for us.

Problem:

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook goes to sleep (if I leave it idle or if I close the lid) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes. When searching the web you get the message “Not connected to the internet”

Why it happens:

Wifi and Bluetooth conflict with each other when the computer wakes. If a bluetooth device was paired, and was disconnected while the mac was sleeping, the mac will first look to repair that device. Since the device does not allow the mac to pair, the mac continues to search for it for up to 1 minute and then will timeout and allow the wifi to ocnnect.

How to test it:

Close the lid of your mac to let it sleep, open it and login, does it take 0-5 seconds to connect Wifi (Wifi icon becomes solid black and can surf the web) if so you are good. Else if wifi icon is gray or shows searching and you cannot surf the web for 30s to 1 minute or until you select your wifi network you have the problem.

Potential ways to get around this (Please add to success/fail count as you test! )

1) EASY - Turn off Bluetooth (Top Right corner menu bar Bluetooth Icon > Turn Bluetooth Off, icon will become gray)

Test it works: Turn bluetooth off, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage: Obviously you cannot use bluetooth.

Success Count: 100+

Fail Count: 0

2) MEDIUM - Delete the plist and reboot your mac (Open finder, select ‘Go’ at top menu bar, ‘Go to folder’ > Library/Preferences, delete this folder if you have it: SystemConfiguration (if you have it) and this file: com.apple.systempreferences.plist (More info https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4301)

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage: Issue returns if after doing this fix, you disconnect a Bluetooth device while the mac is sleeping.

Success Count: 1

Fail Count: 0

2) EASY – If you have unpaired a Bluetooth device while mac was sleeping, repair that device. Unpair it while mac is awake.

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage: You must have the device available of course

Success Count: 1

Fail Count: 0

3) EASY - Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer (Top Right corner menu bar Bluetooth Icon) > Open Bluetooth Preferences > Advanced > Uncheck Bluetooth devices to wake this computer

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage:

Success Count: 0

Fail Count: 1

4) EASY - Disconnect all bluetooth devices (Top Right corner menu bar Bluetooth Icon) > Open Bluetooth Preferences > Remove all connected devices

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage:

Success Count: 0

Fail Count: 1

Words cannot describe how angry this problem makes me. How can world's largest tech company not been able to fix their biggest bug for this many months now?!?!

All these forums are overflowing with the same **** problem: WIFI DOESN'T CONNECT AFTER COMING BACK FROM SLEEP ON MAVERICKS.

How many thousands of people have to post the same godddamn problem for how long?

And no, disconnecting Bluetooth doesn't work (even if it did, its not an acceptable solution). I took my MacBook Air to Apple store twice already and they cannot help either.

aaaAAAAaAaaAAaaarrrrghhh, I'm going to go insane from this problem.

I miss Steve.. he wouldn't let something like this go on for this long. Can a half a trillion dollar company pay attention to its own support forums or at least google "wifi-not-connecting-after-sleep-mavericks" and realize what incompetent company you have become?!

I give you 30 more days, Apple. Afterwards we're going to FTC to try to start the biggest recall you've ever seen.

Apr 1, 2014 9:23 AM in response to Reforger

Yes, this is incredibly frustrating. I appreciate the post with all of the potential solutions outlined, but unfortunately none of them really address the issue. I use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with my Macbook Air because it's situated on a standing desk and connected to an external monitor in a dual monitor setup. It's impossible for me to use the built-in trackpad and keyboard, and it's a pain to use a wired keyboard/mouse because I frequently take the MBA out with me.

This should just work.

I submitted feedback to Apple. Maybe by 10.9.4 it will be fixed.

Running Mavericks 10.9.2...iMac is less than two months old...Out of the box I never once lost a connection. Three days ago I needed to shut down my iMac to unplug the machine. Since I started it up everytime it goes to sleep for any extended period of time it loses it wi-fi connection. If I turn manually turn off/on the wifi it regains the connection. I'm also having email server connection problems. Not sure if that's related but I never had those issues either prior to shutdown/re-start. It should be noted this was the first time I totally powered down my new iMac. Immediately after that all the problems started. This is annoying and unacceptable if it's a OS issue or worse yet a hardware issue.

I should also add that at the around the same time I did the power shut down I also downloaded an update for my wireless printer which actually did not function corrently after the updates. I had to unistall the printer then re-install it (Epson XP-410). I noticed else where that wireless printers may affect the wifi connection after sleeping.

I'm not sure if my problem is the same as the original issue here or the many similar ones. But I have fixed it so will relate:

Recently upgraded to mavericks. But not THAT recently.

Out of the blue my MacBook Pro kept dropping wifi connection, while using, not necessarily on sleep. Would take ages to find the connection. And then it just got worse and worse, and when I tried to connect, a dialogue box told me I could not connect and to run diagnostics. No use that. Then I was asked for my password for the wifi... and although correct password entered, it did not take. Over and over again. Going to network connections I had this new dialogue about Thunderbold Bridge, never seen it before so did some searches and it appeared other users were having problems with wifi with this. So I disabled it, no change. I followed some suggestions: trashed SystemConfiguration folder fixed permissions several times (and of course rebooted etc). On the phone with Apple we reset PRAM and SMC - (and for some reason when setting SMC my green light on the power cord does not change as it should.. but never mind I hope). We deleted location, added new location etc etc. Tried it in Safe Mode and it seemed to work, although wifi VERY slow, but not working in a test user mode. Then the Apple care person got me to some new grey blank screen (sorry don't remember what it was) with internet password and Network login - but it would not accept my password. So he said I'd changed my password, which I hadn't.(we had other macs on this network doing just fine). We tried my IPod, and although it was working fine, once we 'forgot' the network, ti too would not accept the correct password.

He couldn't do anything for me at that point so I rang my profider, Plus Net, who showed me how to reset the router to original password. He told me probably I needed to upgrade my software on iPod and Mac but both are as up to date as possible ( I have old iPod). As I was near the router with my mac, I noticed that the issue seemed to be working... whether it was the router reset or not I didn't know. The iPod too. Accepted password (same old one..) and did not drop wifi. Back in my office.... which is very close to the router, and there are no interferring objects inbetween... the same problem happened. Dropped connection. Wouldn't pick it up. But was fine if I was next to the router.

Rang Apple. Finally got put through to a high level specialist including his direct number and email address. He suggested trying the delete keychain idea. As I have so many I had to copy and save all these which took me an hour and a half, and he was due to ring the next day. After saving all my passwords etc, and now on long ethernet cable in my office, I scrolled through these pages here.

I read about this:

setup your non-Apple wireless router to only use 801.11g as it seems to be 801.11n that Mavericks struggles with. My router at home has both an "n" channel and a guest "g" channel. I don't get any drop outs when I connect via the guest channel, but do when trying to use the faster "n" channel.

I went to my router and could find NO WAY to change this. It seemed set at 802.11b/g/n. BUT. I remembered from years ago a fix on another situation/computer/router: change the CHANNEL from automatic to a fixed channel. I chose Channel 1.

Problem fixed.

But WHY, and why I had a brief problem with the Ipod too, I don't know. As there have been absolutely no changes in our apartment in terms of what could be interfering - unless the neighbours are doing something. I'm not techincal so maybe someone here has an explanation.

Well so far so good. After 8 hours and many grey hairs. Hope the fix stays, if it doesn't I'll be back...

Apr 6, 2014 7:42 AM in response to Reforger

Hi, I have a 3ghz iMac running Mavericks9.2 I'm using an Apple Airport/Time-macchine as my wifi Network router and have same sleep/no-network problem - so you can discount the A.N.OtherBrand hardware incompatibility.

The new Location and resetting everything didn't work for me.

The problem began for me when I installed MicrosoftOffice 2011 - but it could be co-incidence as there was an OS update around the same time. I haven't seen anyone on here with a newer Mac yet, is this an 'old mac forced obsolecence' thing?

Apr 6, 2014 8:08 AM in response to kevinstylus

kevinstylus, I purchased a brand new iMac when Mavericks came out, incorrectly thinking it would be pre-loaded on the computer. The computer still had Mountain Lion and I wish I had experimented with Mountain Lion before doing the upgrade to Mavericks.

I have tried everything on this forum as well as contacting Apple Support, but the problem persists. Oddly enough, it happens in waves and periodically. Sometimes it connects just fine, then there are periods of time where I have to disconnect WiFi to reconnect.

Lesson learned. I will never upgrade again until a few weeks/months have gone by when all the kinks are apparent and worked out.
