Rise of Nations and Quicktime 7.1.2 Conflict

Every once is a while I like to have a game of Rise of Nations and haven't had an issue with any Mac update since the game was released a while ago (late 2004). After the Quicktime 7.1.2 update, the game crashes after start up as it goes into the start of the actual game and is accessing the sound. The console lists a number of items relating to Quicktime 7.1.2. It appears that there is some incompatibility with the update and the game and I have seen a few posts regarding this on the discussions, but they were closed and I couldn't add info.

I tried the game on a few different machines with the 10.4.7 and QT 7.1.2 updates and got the following results. On a Quicksilver Mac 867 MHz with an updated ATI Radeon 9000 (128 MB), it worked fine. On a G4 Powerbook with ATI Radeon 9600 (64 MB), the game did the crash noted above. On an iBook G4 with a ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 (32 MB), the game did the crash noted above.

The 9000 and the 9200 do not support core image, as the 9600 does, but I'm not sure why one works and the others do not unless it's the chipset or maybe it's a combination of the 10.4.7 driver updates with the QT 7.1.2 update. Anyway I wanted to post my findings as it may help someone derive a solution.

Also, I wanted to add it that I saw somewhere that someone had done an open firmware reset and that solved the problem, but I tried and this had no affect on the Powerbook and the iBook.

I've had the same problem with my Dual 1.33 GHz G4, ATI Radeon 9800. RoN started but it crashed almost immediately. The solution?
Revert as soon as possible to QuickTime 7.0.1 using the QuickTime 7 reinstaller.

However, I would appreciate if somebody could explain why this happens, (and how to install QT 7.1.2 again ...)

You will need to contact the games manufacturer for this type of information. It is their responsibility to make sure it works with Apple's system software.

You should report the problem to them so they can update the game. However, chances are that they will not bother.

Well I changed a setting in the intro as to map type and now the QuickSilver machine no longer works either. I guess I'll have to see if Age of Empires II or Age of Mythology still work with the 10.4.7/QT 7.1.2 combo. I saw in some board that the developer was working on a fix, so we'll see - since it was never updated since its first release. But on some of these boards people say that they have contacted Macsoft about it.

I decided to not revert Quicktime as the update was to address some vulnerabilities and that is more important. I'm still disappointed that after so many updates with no problem, this one knocked it out. We'll see what happens.

The patch didn't work for me at first. It (iPatch - Rise of Nations Gold 1.0.1 Updater) kept saying that it could not patch the Rise of Nations file. I did everything that the instructions said and repaired permissions as well just in case something was corrupted. Still no go.

I reinstalled the game from the CD and then attempted to run the updater and everything worked fine - Rise of Nations is back in working order .... and I'm off to conquer the world for a few hours.
