Although the link posted by the other responder shows .bin files to be a copy of RAW CD or DVD data in my experience most .bin files are some type of configuration file mainly used with internet routers and other pieces of PC/Networking equipment.

Just where did this .bin file come from and what is it associated with that you are trying to open on your Mac?

If it is a router configuration file that you downloaded you don't open it on the Mac. You log into your router and go to the update firmware section and browse to that file stored on your Mac hard drive and let the router handle opening and updated the routers firmware.

Wow, I am suprised you found a solution in the reply! I have compressed files as .bin that will only go to .cpgz and the icon changes, but that's it!!

I've searched for extracting tools, downloading "The Unarchiver" app and after initially accepting the .bin file, shot back a warning "can't open this type of file." !

Also surprised there's so little discussion about something so important. Baffled. Cheers. Peace and joy.

I think ".bin" stands for binary. That means it can be anything. Could be a compressed file that is really another format, could be a router configuration file, could be a configuration file for a completely different kind of hardware, or a compressed Windows installer, or a lot of other things. That is why it is important to know where it came from, because it is important to know what it is supposed to be for.
