Mavericks keeps starting up apps on restart

Having the same problem with Sierra. The problem app was Evernote, which was not in my login items and "reopen windows" was unchecked when logging out. However, I found that the "Open Evernote when I log in to my computer" option in the General table of Evernote's preferences was checked. The application's option has never been automatically turned on for any of the other computers I use.

You may want to check the Preferences for any apps that are launching when starting up. Hope that helps.

When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.

Then in System Preferences > General there is a checkbox "close windows when quitting an application" that should be check marked if you don t want it to resume on startup.

Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.

Also, go to System Preferences/Users & Groups/Login Items. See if some of the Apps opening are Login Items.

Not sure why this isn't working for you. I could give you a Terminal command to disable Resume but it would also disable Versions, if you use it. The command is...

defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no

But keep it in your back pocket for now, while we try to troubleshoot your issue.

Create a new user account and test in that account. After checking the appropriate settings in System Preferences open a few apps then restart and test. Does it behave as expected in this fresh user account?

i'm also having this exact problem. I would like to know what's happening. Only started when I installed mavericks.

This behavior began for me with upgrade to Mavericks also. Same situation, I quit my apps before shutdown, and "reopen" is not checked in the shutdown dialogue box, yet the apps all open when I restart, more and more apps...

And another thing, I had set my power button behavior to initiate shutdown and since I upgraded to Mavericks, instantaneous press of the power button is now hibernate or something and I can't find where to change it back.

I'm also having this issue on Marvericks, my finding is, just set "System preference>General>Recent items" to NONE (default is 10). Then try opening some apps and docs...., then quit all apps and restart. It works for me but only bad point is that you can not easily reopen recent documents, files, etc within all apps you frequently use (since it's set to NONE). I personally do not care on that "recent docs" feature as I normally open the files directly from its location not within the apps itself. Booting and shutting down time are more important for me.

Konradphoto's solution seems to work but after sometime the problem came up again! 😟

This worked for me, but only for the login immediately following, now it has reverted :-(
