Mail's 11/7 update worse

I updated to Mail 7.0 build 1822. I'm not sure why I did this. I really wasn't having any issues with it except that my exchange mail wasn't syncing past a month.

I figured the update would fix that. It didn't. But even worse, now I can't connect to any of my icloud accounts, nor yahoo and ironically, no gmail either.

I'm now using AirMail. I can't seem to get Exchange working on that yet so I'm still stuck with Mail until that is fixed.

I'm on a late '08 MacBook.

I found a way to get through the database update on my system. Hope this suggestion can help anyone else stuck where I was.

I force-quit Mail and restarted my machine in safe mode (by holding the Shift key down during restart.)

I then restarted Mail and after a 20 second hang, it switched to "Optimizing database" and then finished and opened my windows.

Everything now appears to be working except that my smart mailboxes are a little wierd. They seem to not recognize that mail that just came in fits into the category of "Less Than 24 days old" and that's the problem I'll have to look into next.

Irtitze -

You're a f-in' genius! Both your suggestions worked and are the only reason Mavericks is still my OS. As you experienced, with my laptop in safe mode Mail ran very slowly - at times I was sure it had frozen, but it rebuilt my accounts eventually and the app opened. Mail was back on my computer. But no smart boxes. This morning I read your follow-up and I did the same thing; created a smart mailbox. Once it was in the sidebar, putting my cursor on the name brought up the word "show" next to it. Clicking on that immediately brought all the old mailboxes to the screen. Thank Jobs! And thank you.

Sounds like the app CAN work so it should be easy enough for Apple developers to fix these issues and get it right for the next release.
