No sound after sleep

Is anyone else having a problem on their Mac (mines the rMBP late 2013) where the sound doesn't work after sleep?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The same here, it happens only when I close the lid with headphones connected, I does not seem to happen when forcing to sleep via Apple menu, only when closing the lid and having headphones connected. Then it is reproducable 9/10 times.

I'll tried to reproduce without headphones connected, but after 3 attempts I gave up.

When this happens, I don't see that I have headphones connected in Sound preferences, it only lists built in speakers but I still get no sound through the built in speakers, a reboot solves the problem.

Very annoying problem ...

I have decided to disable "power nap" and disable "wake for Wi-Fi" in the "Power" section of preferences. I will see if this eliminates the sound problem after waking from sleep. It would be helpful if others could try this as well. I have not had a problem with my external speakers for a while now but know it will no doubt happen again. Maybe these settings could be a temporary fix. Since some of you have the problem occur more frequently than I do, you might want to try this and report back. "Power Nap" doesn't mean much for me and actually probably offers a bit more security for your Mac when it is in sleep mode with Wi-Fi disabled.

My comment on Sound preferences only listing internal speakers was not correct, it changes from headphones to internal speakers and back when attaching/detaching headphones connector.

I tried to restart the coreaudiod but that did not help.

Switching to airplay and playing sound on receiver via Apple TV produces sound on receiver, but switching back to internal speakers/headphones produces no sound at all.

It did not work for me either. In fact, after disabling power nap and wake for Wi-Fi. The sound from my external speakers failed for the first time in three days of frequent use when I lifted the lid today from sleep mode. It definitely didn't help my sound problem either. Disconnecting the external speakers did not produce sound from the internal ones either without a reboot.

I wonder how common this issue is. I have had my late-2013 15 inch macbook pro with retina display for over three months now and I just barely noticed this problem as I don't frequently listen to music or watch video. But as others have stated, I have realized they are correct; without fail, if my laptop goes to sleep while the headphones are plugged in, there is no sound upon wake. I also have been having issues with my computer crashing almost daily, which I hoped would be fixed with 10.9.1 but it was not. I have seen many other reports on that problem as well. It is absolutely ridiculous that my brand new $2600 laptop should be having these types of problems. Apple really needs to get their act together and address these issues.

Hi Guys,

I have experienced same problem. Thank God finally got a solution after calling Apple customer support 5 times. I'm testing last two days so far I've not experience no audio after sleep issue 🙂

Here are steps I've done:

1) Open finder and click Go on the top of the menu and click on Go to folder then Enter " /Library/Preferences/Audio"

2) You will see two files, drag those two files to desktop (you may need these backup files)

3) Restart your mac in safe mode...

- Restart and hold shift key when you hear tone and before the gray screen appears.

- Release the key when you see spinning wheel and logon to your account.

4) Repeat step 1) Now you shouldn't see those two files there. If you see those two files, select both files and move to trash.

5) Restart your mac, make sure those two files are not in the folder.

When you restart your problem will be fixed. I hope this will help you to get rid off from your frustration 🙂

Goodluck and enjoy using your Mac!

There are only two files in that audio folder no hire files or folders in it. I haven't experience the issue after delete those files. I tried many times manually enter to sleep mode. I guess the problem fixed permanently.

I think you are in wrong folder it should be in library/preferences/audio

I checked if you go to library/audio there are many folders. May be you are there.

Make sure you are in right folder and deleting the right files. In that audio folder there are only two files.
