Why won't iphone contacts sync with Google?

I am trying to get my iphone contacts to sync with Goggle (and after that to use this to sync to my Nexus 7 tablet).

I've followed the instructions given to set up a webdav account on the iphone, ie Settings>Mail, Contacts, calendars>add account and so on. Yet the contacts are not syncing. As a test, I created a new Gmail account, added this to the iphone and opened Contacts on the iphone, which is supposed to start the sync process. Nothing - no iphone contacts appear at all, either in my original Google account or the new test one.

The only contacts I'm getting in my gmail account are the addresses culled by Gmail from my emails, and contain only names and email adresses. That is, I'm not getting any of the 'full' contact info that's in my iphone contacts app, which include snail mail addresses, phone numbers etc.

Any suggestions, please?

I'm sorry, I can't understand what you mean. What should I do next?

"however, in Contacts app on your iPhone, your Google account creates it's own group which will only show your contacts in your Google account (www.google.com"

I can't follow this . In the contacts app on my iphone, my Google account creates it's own group?

My understanding is that, having set up a) a google account and b) a webdav account on my iphone, the two should sync with one another, right? But they're not doing so! Am I misunderstanding?

Thank you Meg St._Clair for your patient advice in this thread. I am currently going through the vCard method, after realising what you have already described: that the Import From SIM button only imports those contents that were already previously stored on the SIM before installed in the iphone.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I did not even realise there was such a thing as icloud.com -- I was struggling to follow the google support page as I had no idea how to get a hold of the "vCard" it kept mentioning, and I assumed like the original poster that the iCloud contacts would automatically be sync'd to gmail.

Managing contacts continues to be, in my opinion, more difficult that it seems it ought to be. Even though I think I know what I'm doing, every once in a while, things go screwy on me. 🙂 I can usually sort it out but it's frustrating.

I have had Google and iPhone contacts synced for some time now. I just noticed that about a half dozen iPhone contacts were not synced to Google, and when I added a new one, it didn't sync either.

What I think happened is that at some point in the past I touched the "Groups" button at the upper left of the Contacts screen, and then checked both "All Google" and "All on My iPhone" options on the Groups screen. So apparently if you have "All on My iPhone" checked, then all new contacts default to that - even if "All Google" is also checked.

The solution was to go back and deselect "All on My iPhone" while leaving "All Google" checked for Groups. Now my new contact additions sync with Google.

Unfortunately, I still have to put the half dozen "old" new contacts into Google. Easiest way is to just manually add them in Google and let it sync that way.

Seems like it should sync to both places if both are checked :-/ Sheesh

Hi,

I have a different problem when syncing ios contacts with google contacts.

right now my settings are sync contacts with gmail, and gmail is my default contacts sync.

all my old contacts are synced perfectly. new contacts are not synced at all, changes to old contacts aren't synced either.

The weird part is that, on google forums i was suggested to turn on off sync contacts with gmail.

it deleted all my contacts and re synced only the old synced contacts.

from what i understand that means my new contacts or made in the group gmail and thats why they where deleted when i un synced.

but they are not really synced with google servers and thats why the don't appear there.

gmail sync is set to fetch every 15 min.

also new contacts from gmail dont sync. any suggestions?

thanks

If Google account unable to sync your contacts you can try for different method

  • Login to iCloud.com from web
  • select contacts want to export selected one or choose all
  • Now export all contacts as .vcf vcard file
  • Save your file on local machine
  • transfer to nexus tablet
  • Now you need to go on nexus tablet contacts
  • and import your vcard file which store on your nexus

By following these steps you can easily transfer your contacts from iPhone to Android

Google Sync contacts is able to sync contacts from Google account to iPhone. if you want to try Sync iPhone to Google i think its not be supported yet.

Yes, Gmail does sync contacts back and forth from an iPhone. As I noted two years ago, I've been using Google that way since I got an iPhone. If it's not working for you, it's time to trouble shoot. Start by deleting the Google account from your phone and adding it back.
