iPad Air charging VERY slowly, sometimes "not charging" entirely.

I'm using the charger that came with the new iPad Air in a wall outlet, but it charges incredibly slowly. We're talking like 10% charge in about an hour's time. Sometimes, even with the same set up, it says "not charging" all together. I think it charges even slower when doing it through my MacBook Air. Is anyone else having this issue with their new iPad Air charging slowly?

Also having the same problem. Seems to drain battery pretty quickly (I get about 3 hours use before it's back down to the 10% warning), then takes about 6 hours to recharge.

I could normally get about 3 days use (on and off) from my iPad 2, and that charged fully in an hour or two.

My iPhone 5 seems to swallow battery life quickly too, after a full charge overnight, it's pretty much half way come midday - and I barely use it (making one or two calls, email / twitter / web browsing - maybe 30 minutes max during the course of the morning). Not sure how ANYBODY can realisticly use their phones throughout the day without having to worry about their battery life.

It was a sad day, but I ended up returning my iPad Air due to the horrible battery life it was giving me. I was about to use it for maybe a couple of hours on a full charge, and it would then suddenly be around 20% left. Nothing like Apple was toting for its battery life. Probably the worst battery life of any electronic device I've ever used. :( I'm sticking to my iPad 2 for now, at least until the battery life/charging time issue can be figured out. It certainly sounds like it's affecting a large portion of Air owners, and wasn't just me.

Having similar issues -- After 90 minutes it charged 20%. Haven't had an issue with it depleting quickly just getting the charge. (and I am charging with provided power - screen OFF - smart cover closed). When I tried charging while still using it - I went backwards and although slower than when unplugged lost battery.

Guess I will call the support like others suggest. LOVE LOVE everything else about the Air.

Me too. Just bought the Air and 5S. Came from the Pad1 and 4S. Wow, what a noticeable battery life difference. As with most others here, I too thought that battery life on both devices was to improve significantly - at least that's what the manufacturer's ads promised. What's more, the charging issue is not something I can realistically live with. I have no apps running in the background, and so there's no excuse that when plugged in, the Air should actually "go backwards" in terms of charging. Fortunately, I have time to return everything and reconsider all options. I can't be put in a position where midday during meetings, I have to strategically place myself to be close to power outlets. I need these devices to last at least 8 hours with minimal use!

I believe I have discovered the issue and think it is the charger and/or cord. I used an older charger with an Apple Lightning adapter and it charged a lot faster. I had also had previous fast charging in the auto with a generic AC adaptor and the Apple Lightning adaptor. Prior to discovering this I had taken mine back to Best Buy and they "tested" it but found no issues. They were still willing to exchange it but then had no 64GB white models. They offered to send it out for a week and I declined but I asked them to exchange the cord which they did but that did not help.

If anyone else can try this and confirm it that would be great.

Well, I decided to use AppleCare and return my iPad to Apple to change. I have just received an email from them pretty much saying "There's nothing wrong with the item" and they're returning it as-is. So that's that then. I have to live with a 3 hour battery life and a 10 hour charging time. I think I would prefer to do without an iPad than continuously running on empty. Hopefully I'll be able to return it to the store I got it from for a refund.

Apple only had my iPad for an afternoon before returning it, so I'm not sure how they judged it to be 'ok'.

I've tried an alternate power cable as one user suggested but it made no difference, unfortunately.

By alternate method do you mean you used the old parallel plug with an Apple Lightning adapter? It worked very well for me. I have only had one instance of the battery losing charge to fast so I cannot comment on that. I did do a reset as recommended by one user above. Did not help the charging issue but I had no more instances of losing power to fast. I am sure Apple is not willing to jump out there and admit to an issue unless someone can prove without a doubt there is an issue...

Hey guys, OP here. I appreciate the discussion going on here, and I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one here who has had issues with the Air's battery life. I ended up returning my original Air, but then repurchased another one a week later. The new one I'm using has slightly better battery longevity, but still doesn't provide the ten hours that Apple promised. It also charges SLIGHTLY quicker, but that's not saying much. It just ***** having to have a charger with you at all times when the iPad travels with. But I would recommend trading in your current device and getting a new Air. It helped me anyway, and hopefully it'll help others. It's just massively unfortunate that that has to happen. After spending $500, you'd expect to purchase a device that actually works!

Hi there ,

I have to say although I do like apple products, they do have a history , like politicians of avoiding direct questions. For example, when you read in the paper that an IPad Air exploding in a Vodaphone shop in Australia, being quite concerned after hearing about this two days after I purchased my iPad air. The representative at apple customer services declined to comment. And apple also have declined to comment in the press also. Who remembers apple trying to serve an injunction on a family whose daughter had her iPhone explode ? Apple's customer service although good, in some cases when the big issues occur they are not very good to deal with your fears when things go wrong .

I have noticed that with iOS 7 although you get the percentage saying 100% the lightning bolt sign at the side does not turn into a plug sign as it did when you fully charged your iOS device under iOS 6 and also Bruce if this I do not think my iPad air is getting the full charge . I have been reassured by apple technical support that under iOS 7 the lightning bolt symbol is supposed to stay there at all times .

OK...purchased iPad Air 64gb LTE model a week ago. 90% battery out of the package. Used for about a week and was down to 25% (didn't use so much, and battery seemed pretty robust to me based on amount of use, time that went buy and amount of discharge). Plugged in and same issue as everyone else: Didn't charge very fast (3 hours to get from 25%--->40%).

Called Apple Care, got call escalated, got a senior tech support guy, and got the problem solved quickly. Here's the quick fix: Gotta use the 10 watt plug that comes with the iPad Air, and not the smaller 5 watt plug that comes with the iPad Mini, iPhones, etc.

Turns out the iPad Air battery is pretty heavy duty and needs the heavier duty charger. Immediately started charging much faster (40%--->69% in 45 min which seems pretty reasonable). Apple Care guy really nice...understandable not to thought the new charger was that important, but it is. The iPad mini can use the smaller one the phones use...iPad Air not so much. See if that fixes your problem before throwing in the towel, throwing the iPad under the bus, returning the thing, resetting, Apple Store appt, etc, etc. Hope this helps.

I have been using the charger that came with my iPad Air... Did not have a choice since I did not have the iPhone 5, or Mini. My wife does have the iPhone 5 and her charger is same as my Air, in appearance. The Apple telephone support did a complete reset with me last night and it did not help. One hour = 10% battery life, I also started noting the block that goes in outlet gets very warm, almost hot.

iPad Air charging VERY slowly, sometimes "not charging" entirely.
