compress files: NEED HELP

does anyone know how to compress mp4/mp3 files without compromising the sound quality too much? As soon as I go to 64kps it sounds rubbish.

Compressor the app. will turn out a fair Mp4: New default setting>Mp4 at a nice total 72kbs[64kbs bit]. Both media most often occur in 128kbs, why do you need less? It's going to be hard to get anything to sound good at 64. So what program are you using to encode, it should be able to compress the Mp3s by itself, but try Compressor first then your encoder app.
