How to Change View Options for ALL Finder Windows?

I can't help, since I only use list view and always hide the sidebar, which I find intrusive. Maybe someone else can help.

It worked for me on El Cap. I got an output similar to this:

But when I rebooted and opened a finder window, all directory views had been reset to the default as desired.

Worked for me. Followed your instructions, copy and pasted code to avoid mistakes, and now perfect all windows open as I want.

Using a MacBook Pro 2013, running ElCapitan.

When I first started using Macs, you could not get Folders to display first and the files (as in MS windows), now mine does, has this been now been changed to allow the OS to do this.

I'm guessing the code deletes all the previous memorised display characteristics of each folder, so you are (after running the script) in effect opening each folder for the very first time and it is taking it's view options from the default.

This seems to be a problem that gets progressively worse with Finder (on all OS X versions)

A clean install and everything is good for a while and then it just randomly starts happening

Been like this for as long as I can remember (OS X Tiger I think)

May I suggest, since this command line is relatively safe (only .DS_Store files will be deleted), to add the "-f" modifier - to force the deletion?

The full line would then become :

sudo find / -name ".DS_Store" -exec rm -f {} \;

This has been a constant irritant for 16 years (sixteen years?). I will set a default on how a window will display. I will open a window and change it from list to icon view, then every window I open from that point will open in icon view, no matter how I previoiusly set it. If I then change a view in a window to list, every window (including those previously set to icon view) will switch to list view.

This was introduced when the OS switched to UNIX. Up through OS9 this never was a problem. Apple doesn't listen to officially posted feature requests on this.

There is a tip in this discussion about changing all windows, including those opened in the past, to default to a specific view. Does anyone know how to set a display default that doesn't screw with previous windows?
