iPad 3 - No sound from speakers, but headphones work fine

Hi

Yesterday my ipad's sound abruptly stopped. I was playing something on youtube and suddenly the sound just wasnt there. The button clicks, SIRI etc too did not have any sound coming from speakers. However when I connected a 3.5mm jack headphone, it worked just fine, and i can hear sound via headphones.

I tried googling and resetting settings and then doing to full facotry reset but nothing worked.

Its an ipad 3 around 1 year 2 months old. Any advice to fix this problem is appreciated

Has anyone else had this problem recently?

thanks

If you don't have sound using Siri, perhaps you have system sounds muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.

This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

If that's not the problem either and you still have no sound, try cleaning the dock connector opening of the iPad with a soft brush - like a toothbrush - and use just a little bit of rubbing alcohol, if you have some in the house. If not, just try the soft brush.

Wow, take that you Apple Genius folks....I had been going through multiple support groups about this very issue for 3 days now. I don't have compressed air, I just took a deep breath and blew into the headphone jack and another time into the docking jack...and it fixed my issue as well. Thanks PKG0928...Can't believe it worked...has to to be the best non-technical solution I've every come across.

Apple, who is more important, Apple customers or shareholders? The speaker failed on my iPad 3 so I read a lot of the posts and tried some of what they offered. In my case if I sprayed a can of air duster into the dock the speaker would work until I stopped spraying. So I figured it had to be a loose connection, so made and appt. with Apple genius today. Had to wait 3 hours. Met with genius who did a diagnostic test and claimed the result was a hardware failure. He said the only thing he could do, because they can't open them up, was to offer me a new one for $299. I said no. I explained to him, while others around me were very interested in what i had to say, that there have been a lot of posts on the net regarding this issue. Many of which indicated they had invested a lot of money into Apple products because they expect them to last, but would no longer do so. Fergi's post caught my eye because I too have done the same. Until today I have purchased iPods , iPads, Mac Books, Mac Air, I-Mac, thousands of dollars worth. I have promoted Apple products to friends and family members, most who have purchased them based on my recommendation. I was going to buy an Iphone 6 plus and a watch when they come out but now my taste has been soured by the experience I just had with the hardware and the genius. We were both polite but he actually said I could go to another company. Apple has become a huge company with the help of it's millions of customers and I am just a grain of sand on the beach. I have been an Apple customer since the first machines they produced. I remember the hard times they went through when they had to bring back Steve Jobs to turn it around. It would seem wise to me to take some of the huge profits and make sure the existing customers are kept happy, call it a marketing expense. Please don't wait until you start loosing them and then try to get them back when it's too late. Customer relations and quality of product to me are the most important for longevity. A stock holder can be gone with a key stroke.

A follow up to my post. As a last resort I purchased a Belkin Thunderstorm Case ( http://www.belkin.com/thunderstorm/#!// ) on Amazon for $49. This solved my problem and even surprised me with the great theater sound I get for movies. If you have confirmed from Apple that it is a hardware problem but your sound still works through your ear buds, then by all means, I suggest you invest in this hardware. It does add some weight to your Ipad but you will be impressed by the sound quality. If you get one please reply if you agree.🙂
