Java and Java Plug In with OSX 10.9

I have tried to download Java several times tonight and it keeps telling me I don't have the plug-in. I am reading it is because of a recent update to the Mac OS System. Can anyone help me with this. I am running OSX 10.9. Thanks.

Hello,

My problem is now solved: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5564600?answerId=23818636022#23818636022

I tried the instructiosn provided by Apple to re-enable Java SE:

Java for OS X 2013-005: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web plug-in and Web Start functionality. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5559

For this you don't need to configure Java from System Preferences.

I didn't try to reinstall the Java Applet Plug-in provided by Oracle (which I think it is recommended) because I'm afraid that the problem gets back, and need to have Java on this Mac now. I'll wait for an update from Oracle.

Thank you for posting that. I tried to do what you suggested and was asked for a password on the terminal page. I do not know what that is - this is my home computer and the only password we have is our itunes passwored. I think I am going to call Apple and see if they can help. I have spent a week on this and beyond frustrated.

You might have a password set to your user account long time ago, but you forgot about it.

Since you are running Mavericks, you can follow the steps provided by Cult of Mac in the following link to reset your user account password, using your Apple ID:

FWIW, I run both SE 6 and SE 7 JREs in both Mtn Lion and Mavericks w/o any issues.

Which has higher secured risks when used for Java websites? SE 6 from Apple or Java 7 JRE from Oracle?

Considering that Java 7 JRE is being updated and developed, but the current Java update from Apple is likely to be the last update that enables people to use its JRE that hasn't been developed since 2010.

Haven't a clue, but since Java for OS X 2013-005 was released last month, I don't know why you think it'll be the last one. All I know is that until all developers and website managers update everything to work with SE 7 (Lion and later OSs) and aren't afraid of alienating all those who still run Snow Leopard and earlier, I see SE 6 to continue a long and useful life.
