Sleep/wake crash OSX Mavericks, Macbook Air 2013

Hi there,

Since the upgrade to Mavericks my 2013 Macbook Air had a few sleep wake crashes. The problem occurs when my air turns to sleep, and I try to wake it with the keyboard within a very short time.(1-3 seconds I think) Happened a few times when I was typing and accidently pressed the on/off button while typing(which is a really stupid feature in the new OSX if you ask me) and a few times when I tried to safe my laptop from going to sleep because it was idle for to long, and just got there to late. What happens is that the Macbook just gives a black screen, but is still on. I cant let it sleep by closing the lid, and the only way to get it running again is by restarting.(holding down the on/off button)

Couldnt find anything similar to this. So i'm hoping if this is a common problem with Mavericks and is on the list to be fixed with the new patch.

I hope you guys have some info.

Hi all:

While the issue I faced is not entirely the same as what has been discussed so far in this thread, I wanted to post in case it provides anyone a lead. After updating my Late-2013 15 inch MBP to 10.9.3, I began experiencing system sleep/wake/shutdown issues. For instance, shutdowns that took less than three seconds on 10.9.2 were routinely taking over 15 seconds on 10.9.3. Also, if allowed to sleep, the system would take about 10 seconds to wake and show the login prompt (assuming it succeeded in waking without freezing.) During those intervening seconds, the screen background would be black with a visible, responsive pointer. After resuming from sleep the system would be unstable, requiring a restart to "fix" the issue.

After investigating the console logs and doing several controlled reinstalls of 10.9.3 and software, I was able to identify the likely culprit - a Canon scanner driver for my MP560 series PSC. In all cases the system was stable until installation of the Canon ScanGear package. It seems, at least in this case, that there is an issue with this driver on 10.9.3. (The driver I used is the newest available).

I have a mid-2012 MBA that is still running 10.9.2 with the same Canon drivers. I will repost if that system suffers the same fate after upgrading. In the interim, if you have a similar setup to mine and are experiencing sleep/wake/shutdown crashes, you may want to consider possible driver problems. Since I rebuilt my system without the ScanGear driver, it seems to be working perfectly.

Regards,

Ron

Quick question. Is this the Apple provided CUPS driver 10.84.2.0 from around 4/23/2014 or one provided directly from Canon? According to OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download that one supports both print and scan functions, but I know this normally only includes basic functionality compared to vender provided software.

i have been having the same problems on my brand new MBA 2013 and the only way to wake it up is by resarting the computer and im a student and if i resart my computer i been loseing my work because of it. i tried to rest the PRAM just a few secounds a go and im going to see if that works to help fix the problem and i also dont think that its a printer or scanner driver from cannon that is causing this because if you look at this article it tells you more about the problem. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1708304

Sorry for the delay in responding. I should have been more clear about the drivers in use... The Canon-provided TWAIN driver (15.5.2a) was the issue for me. The CUPS 10.84.2.0 driver works fine, and in fact that is what I eventually used to rectify the issue. My MP560 is networked, and I only use it for basic functionality anyway. As of now, both my Macs are working as expected and I have use of both scanning and printing features of the MP560.

Note that the 3 month old article discusses a fix being incorporated into 10.9.2 which may have helped some, but clearly not all. There was no indication in any of the documentation I've read that it was addressed in any way with 10.9.3.

I Spoke to Apple care about the Sleep/wake crash and they gave me a couple commands to try out on my MBA and so far it has been not crashing

Heres how to fix the crashing

Resart your MBA and hold down Command and S at the same time and you should see a buch of code than once the code stops you should be abile to type. Type this "mount -uw /" than press enter.

after that is has been approve type this "cd /Library/Preferences and make sure you caplise the L and the P after that type the next line of code after the last one gets approved. type this "com.apple.loginwindow.plist oldlogin" than press enter after that. than the very last code is to rebot the computer which to do so type rebot in the last line and press enter. your code when you do it should look like this.https://www.dropbox.com/s/w25a97xesjwlj9j/photo.JPG

The instructions in your screen shot are clear, the ones in your text contain a few mistakes!

1. Restart holding down Command and S at the same time. (By doing so you enter Single-User Mode.)

2. At the prompt type "mount -uw /" (without quotes) then press Enter.

3. At the next prompt type "cd /Library/Preferences" (without quotes) then press Enter.

4. At the next prompt type "mv com.apple.loginwindow.plist oldlogin" (without quotes) then press Enter.

5. And finally type "reboot" then press Enter.

This sleep/wake thing has been out there since Mavericks arrived- along with the excessive power drain. I have halted all Apple purchases for myself and my Company until Apple finally fixes the problem- 2 years and counting- meanwhile all my employees are moving to Dell! Wake up Apple- this is an embarrassing problem that you refuse to acknowledge.
