Sleep/wake crash OSX Mavericks, Macbook Air 2013

Hi there,

Since the upgrade to Mavericks my 2013 Macbook Air had a few sleep wake crashes. The problem occurs when my air turns to sleep, and I try to wake it with the keyboard within a very short time.(1-3 seconds I think) Happened a few times when I was typing and accidently pressed the on/off button while typing(which is a really stupid feature in the new OSX if you ask me) and a few times when I tried to safe my laptop from going to sleep because it was idle for to long, and just got there to late. What happens is that the Macbook just gives a black screen, but is still on. I cant let it sleep by closing the lid, and the only way to get it running again is by restarting.(holding down the on/off button)

Couldnt find anything similar to this. So i'm hoping if this is a common problem with Mavericks and is on the list to be fixed with the new patch.

I hope you guys have some info.

Agreed. Someone hasn't read the title or the posts.

This is to do with a sleep/wake problem with Mavericks NOT to do with a problem with specific Hard Drives. For those people they should initiate a new thread.

Mavericks has a problem properly waking from sleep/screen shutoff which requires a reboot.

It's specific to the OS and the problem everyone on page 1 has been experiencing. There are no HD or firmware issues in this thread, it's a fault that Apple needs to fix and erroneous posts just deflects from getting this problem addressed since it could cause data loss and lots of us are experiencing the issue.

Please read the post and thread title before posting, we are all desperate for a suitable fix of which Apple seem to be incredibly slow at the moment.

Well stated eurisko67.

I'm new to this forum and am confused about whether it is actually monitored by the Apple engineers or support organizations. I would think it would take a fairly large staff to continuously analyze the volume of complex topics posted here. I think that's why I've often seen the forum's senior contributors strongly recommending that we send our feedback directly to Apple (http://www.apple.com/feedback), which makes sense regardless of whether these pages are being monitored.

Hi,

I have this issue on a new 11" macbook air that I took delivery of on Monday - about 1/3 of the time, pushing the power button basically kills the machine and it requires a hard reset to bring it back to life.

The very first time I powered the machine up, it went to sleep during the setup process and I was unable to revive it without during a hard reset. I didn't have it connected to the power supply at the time and I thought that the battery was flat so I connected a charger and restarted the process, only to have it fail to wake from sleep about a dozen times in the half a day I've been trying to use it.

I've just been on the phone for a couple of hours with the apple support people and we're not clear if it's a hardware issue or a mavericks issue. I've not used Mavericks before this new macbook so I didn't understand how the power button functionality had changed. I used to routinely use the power button to trigger the dialog and then press 'r' to restart 's' to sleep or return to shutdown, now the blank screen I get immediately on hitting that button is a suprise, not at all helpful TBH.

I'm going through a HD erase - OS reinstall cycle at the moment. If I am able to reproduce the problem after that, I'm to call and get a hardware replacement.

I'll post how I get on to this thread,

thanks

ROg

My brother and I used our macbook airs for school daily and I, at least, have lost work when I have accidentally pressed the off button, as it puts it to sleep, and then I have instantly pressed the space bar to wake it up and it has needed rebooting. I have since returned mine (my brother hasn't) and upgraded to a macbook pro w/ retina and have not experienced any issues. It is a shame because I really enjoyed the macbook air's portability.

Hi,

I just reinstalled mavericks, ran software update to bring it up to date. Was able to reproduce the problem within about 5 seconds.

Pushed the power button to put it to sleep. Pushed space again about 2 seconds later, got a login box, logged in successfully. Pushed the power button again, killed the machine. I'm unable to wake it up.

So that's a brand new macbook air that's just had a fresh OS install brought up to date and it's not waking up from sleep.

I'll call apple again and post how I get on,

Hope this helps someone

thanks

Everyone, please take a look at your memory: if one of the slot is missing.

I had everything similar to the symptom discussed in this thread (though not a MBA, but mid 2009 13' MBP). Accidentally, I found that one of my memory stick is missing (2x4G, only slot 0 is using, slot 1 is empty). And I suspect it is the reason causing the sleep problem. Please take a look at these threads:

Basically, if you have 2 sticks, but after sleeping, one is missing, the OS cannot find the neccessary data from the missing one and hence got stuck. I am leaning towards the problem here.

The above hardware issue sounds pretty convincing until the final post which says that the issue didn't occur once when he was running Windows 7 under Bootcamp!

Having had 2 brand new rMBP's running Mavericks, both with the sleep / wake crash issue, I am eagerly awaiting the OSX update that will fix this. I don't really want some apple 'Genius' opening up the machine and randomly swapping parts without fixing the issue.

I have provided feedback to Apple as suggested but now think that we need the support of the press to get some kind of definitive statement.

Could I re-iterate the advice given by YeOldMacFan above and ask absolutely EVERYONE experiencing this issue to report it, in Feedback, directly to Apple using http://www.apple.com/feedback

I have just spoken to Apple Support who insist that the sleep / wake crash is NOT a Known Issue.

Despite the fact that they replaced my brand new MBPr for this reason and the fact that I have submitted feedback myself, it is really a numbers game. Many users have to provide feedback on a problem before it is even considered. Apple DO NOT read / monitor the Forums as a matter of course.

Amusingly...... Before passing me to an intelligent being, the first guy I spoke to at Apple Support tried to reassure me by telling me that he does not have an Apple Computer himself but gets this same problem with his Windows machine. So concluded that it was not an Apple Problem. What kind of ****heads are they employing now!!!!!

For anyone who wants more information, please see: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475679

This is a software issue in Mavericks - please do not waste your time going to the apple store and waiting for a hardware fix/replacement, regardless of what Apple says (unless you want an excuse to get a new machines with less scratches or a refund).

I will second that for both Mac Pro and Mac Mini Server. I've turned all hibernate functions off and no longer have the problem. I think the laptops just have more critical, and frequent, need of hibernation functions and it's going to show up a lot more. I would like to see one of the MBA users set their Energy Saver->Computer Sleep to "Never" and manually sleep their machine when when not in use, just to see if the problem goes away for them. Not a solution I realize, but certainly an indicator. Screen saver and/or monitor shut off will not trigger this problem in my experience thus far. I've gone for over a week without the crash and it was consistent prior to that following the upgrade to Mavericks.

Hopefully people are reporting the problem to Apple through the method mentioned a few posts back.
