This is how I fixed my Error 3 on my iPhone 4s. Only for Windows Computers.

Windows:

Step 1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories

Step 2. Run Notepad

Step 3. Click “Open..” from File menu.

Step 4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc

Step 5. In "files of type:" select all documents

Step 6. Open "hosts" and "host.umbrella"

Step 7. Delete all lines that has "gs.apple.com" in both files

Step 8. Hit Save (make sure you make copies of them BEFORE you make any changes just in case)

Step 9. Restore your device

it stops iTunes from talking to Apple

Yes this is all rather nice advice but doesn`t fix this issue.lets do some detective work here...the phone reaches all the way to 97% on restore and then gets put into a queue on apples own server whilst "they" check if the phone is still in warranty... once they ascertained it is out then they instruct the phone with an error code and delightfully explain that it is unknown.Well this is happening to an awful lot of their loyal customers who are getting fedup with this disloyal behaviour from them.I for one haven`t got the time to set up a web site to invite apple customers world wide to join it and put forward aclass action against apple for mis selling a product by making it non fuctioning after warranty passes.

Any manufacturer must surely realise in order to retain loyalty and customer return you got to sell them something that will continue to work without interference by them at some future date. This is wrong practice and they are getting away with it ....for the moment.

I will jump for joy when they have to refund people that they have systematically ripping off all these years.
