My network connection completely died - "failed: 49 - Can't assign requested address"

The entire networking stack on my 2012 Retina MBP died just a few minutes ago, and I was only able to get it up and running by rebooting.

First no sites in Safari worked and then I noticed when using telnet that:

[stig@Hyperion:~]$ telnet www.allthingsd.com 80

Strangely enough traceroute and ping worked.

In the system log there is no warning untill the network is down:

I tried flushing the routes and using ifconfig to down/up the interfaces but nothing worked.

Has anybody seen anything like this?

I'm running 10.9.2 and have not experienced this issue lately for some reason. I was experiencing the problem ~ 20 something days uptime, but now I've made it 42 days without incident:

sloth:~ guy$ uptime

16:22 up 42 days, 5:56, 5 users, load averages: 1.79 1.76 1.84

Hi,

yesterday a customer called because of the unreliable server, services do not respond after a few days of uptime - we setup to reboot the server every night. Just a really bad workaround. 😟

Apple are going to fix this?

It's happening there since 10.9.0 after 20-30 days.

The issue is still happening on 10.9.3.

Only rebooting resolves the issues... for a few days...

I can confirm that blocking outgoing connections on TCP ports 2195 and 5223 solved the problem for me.

Same here. Any http connection dies, other stuff (email, dropbox, spotify, you name it) keeps on running BUT your http connection in Parallel lives on. I'm not 100% sure but in my experience this issue started with the 10.9.2 update

I got this symptom in 10.9.4 today after just a few hours of uptime. I believe the culprit was my VPN software. I put the MBP to sleep while on VPN, and awoke it when I got back home. Although I shut down the VPN software normally from its normal menu command, it left behind a whole bunch of improper ARP routes (as seen with netstat -r -n). To fix the issue I had to activate an advanced option in my VPN software that has it reset the adapter after it disconnects.

My network connection completely died - "failed: 49 - Can't assign requested address"
