Burning slideshow from iPhoto to dvd?

What you need to do, is to render your iPhoto slideshow as a video by using the "Export" button. Then use any application that can burn a video DVD to burn the movie to DVD.

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. Select Size = Medium or Large. With iPhoto 9.5 select 480p as the export size.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

How do you know if your MacBook has iDVD?

If you have iDVD, you should see it in the "Applications" folder. Newer Mac, since the release of MacOS X 10.7, do no longer come with iDVD. You can still find it on the boxed iLife '11 DVDs.

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac or you don't have it on another earlier Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.

Why iLife 09 instead of 11?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Old Toad, I'm having issues with what I believe is the encoding!?!?!? I exported to a slideshow from iPhoto and it turned out as an "APPLE MOVIE". followed your directions to get it into iDVD, and every slide starts out grainy, then clears up RIGHT before moving on to the next one....What did I do wrong?

When I exported I chose "Display" for my size. Ultimately, all I want to do is make DVDs for folks that can be played on their TVs.

If there is any way you can help I would greatly appreciate it. This is very time sensitive as I need this for Thursday, 06/12/14. This is a gift to my wife's students on their last day of school.

What were the setting on the slideshow in iPhoto and what format did you export as?

What were the pixel dimensions of the photos that you used in iPhoto?

How much free space do you have on your boot drive?

What brand of disk did you use?

What burn speed?

Did you create a disk image and test the project from it with DVD Player?

Can you rephrase in English?

OK, I'm at work, but here is what I do know without being at the computer.

I haven't even tried to burn it to DVD yet. I was previewing in iDVD and saw the issue. Just for the sake of time (as it takes soooo long to export the slideshow, I ran it again before leaving work in the "LARGE" size, vs. "Display" option to see if lessor quality would help. So, unfortunately, the only other relavant question I can answer before I get home is that I'm using Memorex disks.

Thoughts, or is the rest of the information needed?

I'm praying that the change I made it exporting "Large" vs. "Display" will do the trick as otherwise tonight will be a very long/late night.

Ex;porting at the very large display size required iDVD to do more compression/encoding on the video to get it to the size it uses for the DVD. That will result in a lessor quality final product.

If the new exported video plays correctly start a new iDVD project and create a disk image of it before burning. Play the disk image with DVD Player and if it plays satisfactorily burn the disk image to disk with Disk Utility at 2x or 4x speed, the slower the better.

Sounds like a plan. I will certainly try all you mention. I hope it works, otherwise I'm hoping you are very board tonight and have nothing to do but be watching e-mails between ~5:00 p.m. Central and 9:00 p.m. Central. 😀

When saving as a disk image turn off all Energy Saving so as not to interrupt the process. Also make sure you have a minimum of 20-25 GB of free space on your boot drive.

Wow, I even tried it at Medium and it wasn't any better. SOOOO, I figured something out. I wasn't using "Custom Export" and the only file format that it was exporting as was an m4v (Apple Movie). So, I'm trying to do Custom Export as a QT movie. Might that be my issue?

I tried "Large" and it appears it could take awhile at the current rate, which means a long night ahead for me. :-(

Do you think I'm barking up the right tree? THought I would ask so that I'm not wasting my time.
