Mavericks Mail not sync'ing IMAP act. (Not GMail)

I have been waiting silently to see if a fix would come on its own, but none yet. Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail.app does NOT sync my IMAP accounts correctly. I have gone so far as to remove and re-add the accounts numerous times... no change. The recent "update" that was supposed to address Gmail issues had no affect on my sync'ing issues either. As others have posted, I basically have to quit and re-launch mail for it to correctly show what is on the mail server. All of my iDevices are working just fine - I can read or move an email, and all my iDevices show it correctly... but when I return to my Mac - some show as unread - some messages that I moved or deleted are still THERE (unread), etc.

Once I quit and relaunch, the inbox displays correctly - but there is no way (that I can find) to force the inbox to "refresh" correctly while the app is open. "Getting new" messages does nothing to help. Has anyone found a solution or work-around...? or is this just a "sit back and wait for Apple to fix" kind of problem...?

Thanks,

SF

Mail is not connecting to the server after OS X Mavericks update. Meanwhile the same setting is working from Ipad, Iphone and even in windows mail. We have an exclusive mail server in our office. Connecting to mail server is easy only on the same server network with the same setting only by changing the server local address, but not working by the server IP from the internet.

Dangit. Things worked great for about half a dozen emails but then the automatic check didn't happen, and I clicked the get mail button and nothing happened, and there was definitely mail to be downloaded. Closing and restarting mail made it appear immediately.

Why that change would fix things for 20 minutes but then not fix things, I have no idea.

Bummer. That would have been so easy and sort of explainable.

Thanks, FriarOP. I just noticed this problem the other day, although I run 3 Gmail accounts on Mail. One of them was behaving, but the other 2 were not. Checked my settings, and indeed, the domain was not part of my account name. As soon as I added it to both of the misbehaving accounts, 45 messages came flooding in.

Keeping fingers crossed it's fixed for good (of course, until the NEXT update!).

I can say that the "fix" of completing the full domain is not the culprit - as I have had the full domain since day-one in my account.

I have basically given-up at this point (I am the initial author of this thread).

I am just going to assume Mail will suck until it doesn't. I will just routinely Quit and relaunch mail every time I come to my computer. If a future update fixes this... GREAT!!! If not... I am not going to waste any more cycles worrying about it. I've had it. [ shrug ]

1) Quit Mail

2) Delete Google Mail Account from "Internet Accounts" in System Preferences

2) Delete Mail folder in ~/Library

3) Restart and then empty trash.

4) Open Mail, go to Mail-->Preferences-->Accounts-->+ to add a new account, select Google, type your info in, but then go to the account in the list and change your username to your FULL email address.

I followed your instructions -- very simple.

Since re-adding my Mail account settings about 3 hours ago, everything has been working correctly.

Will check back tomorrow.

Thanks!

I have come to the same conclusion, Scott. It's a bug and the only solution is for Apple to release a fix.

If you are experiencing the problem as originally described, do not bother with any of the “fixes” suggested. They may appear to work at first, but it's just because restarting Mail is in fact the only thing that consistently forces Mail to fetch new email. Again, I'm talking about an IMAP account that is NOT gmail. In my case, it is GoDaddy IMAP. The fact that GoDaddy's mail servers do not support the IDLE command could be a factor, but everything was working fine before Mavericks. I have discussed this with GoDaddy. I'm certain the problem is on Apple's end.

Lastly, as I've mentioned multiple times, Mail on my MacBook Pro Retina DOES fetch new email while sleeping with the lid closed. I know this because it runs my rules on new emails. So that's more evidence that it is a bug and definitely not incorrect account settings in Mail.

This will be my last response as well. I'm ignoring the so-called solutions until Apple releases an update. So frustrating.

me too .Working with the problems, just very carefully and mindful of the problems. my new email count is still a number picked out of the blue by fairies, it would seem. It has no correlation on the number of unopened emails.

my rules sometimes work.

agreed on whos problem it is. i had my same set up with 10.8 mail and i didnt ever notice one tiny single issue with anything part of my Email system. 10.9 just fell apart

Mar 28, 2014 6:53 AM in response to dPod

dPod is right - this is a glitch/bug/error that can only be fixed by Apple. I have done everything suggested in this post with no resolution...deleting library, Internet accounts, etc. I am using an e-mail address with GoDaddy too -NOT GMAIL! All worked fine before upgrading to 10.9.2. Mail will not load new e-mails from the server - will display them only to have them vanish from my inbox seconds later. I have screen videos on this happening. E-mails will sit on the server and not come into my inbox till about 2 hours after their time stamp. I frequently find e-mails not sending as well and getting hung up in my outbox. Quitting mail only gets it hung up again - I have force quit, then relaunch to get e-mails to send and get some new ones to load in my inbox.

I feel as though in 2014, IMAP e-mail should be a basic function of an e-mail program - especially from Apple Computer. If I was not entrenched in the Apple eco-system with contacts, iphone/ipad etc all "syncing" I would have switched to Outlook by now. Plus, there is no way to export previous recipients in one file....

Someone at Apple - please take notice and make MAIL work to handle MAIL!

This problem is NOT just with those two providers.

Not for me, I work in the EU and the USA, (Mail 7.2) works correctly in all the locations I am in. It works correctly with all of the standards compliant email systems I have used and still use.

So why don't you tell Apple that they need to fix this now.

Here is a link that you can use to tell Apple rather than us (as we can't fix it for you)

Mar 28, 2014 7:16 AM in response to Mark_in_TCI

Correct, it's NOT just about a couple of providers. Mine is Network Solutions.

This is clearly not something "we are doing wrong". There are some smart people here trying to find solutions and workarounds, but the reality is: This is Mail. People LESS savvy than us have been setting up email accounts for decades now. It really isn't rocket science. It's not our fault.

I hope Apple figures this out soon - but as I said, I am not holding my breath any longer. Just dealing with it for now.

I'll tell you one thing... heheheh... if Steve was having this issue on HIS Mac while he was alive, this s*** would have been sorted out a few days after the release. 🙂

The same compnay and same set up on 10.8 worked perfectly.

This is a key thing to remember - the same with me. I have had my email addy since around 1998... it has passed along from OS to OS... computer to computer. Never have I had this issue before. Granted, I have only been IMAP for maybe 6-7 years, but still flawless for years until 10.9 - seems pretty cut-n-dry to me. 🙂

The GoDaddy and Gmail problems extend back a long way, and are not limited to Mail on a Mac. Gmail has been flaky since its inception many years ago. Both of these accounts were problematic long before Steve died.

Choosing to wait for 'someone' to fix it is one way to deal with it, a far faster method would be to use an email system that actually complies with the standards, or a client that can deal with the non standard systems.

But it's your choice.
