Mavericks Mail not sync'ing IMAP act. (Not GMail)

I have the problem as many of the posters in this long chain. I have a MacBook Pro Retina.

Ever since the Mavericks 10.9.2 update, my IMAP mail account with GoDaddy has not been syncing properly. New messages do not appear in my inbox even if I click “Get new messages in all accounts”.

The only surefire way to get new messages is to quit and re-launch Mail. (Sometimes clicking on other folders and back to the inbox will also do the trick.)

So the latest update fixed gmail synching and broke standard IMAP syncing.

GoDaddy does not support the IDLE command (rather unfortunately), which may be a factor. However, toggling the “Use IDLE command if the server supports it” has no effect on the problem (except that GoDaddy email has always synced better with the option unchecked).

Here is an interesting twist: Mail DOES receive new messages while in Power Nap mode! So while the computer is sleeping with the lid closed, Mail checks for new messages and even runs my rules, but it doesn't work while it's awake!

The latest update (for me) changed nothing, Imap sync worked before the update and still does, same for Gmail and MS Exchange accounts.

Dumped Avast. All worked fine. Installing Sophos now and will see if that works better. Thanks for the advice (much earlier in the thread) about spam filters.

I have same problem with Mavericks Mail not syncing with IMAP servers. I use several different mail servers in different countries and have the problem with all of them. Problem exists on three different Macs too (new 27" iMac, mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro, and brand new 13" MacBook Pro), so it's clearly a Mavericks issue. C'mon Apple; this can't be that hard to fix.

I have mavericks on a mini. I use mail for the 2 comcasts accounts with no issue. I set up a gmail account for a new home business and have had nothing but problems trying to use it with the Mail. I have to take the account offline, then online, then maybe I get new mail. In the mean time, i know the account is getting mail because it comes to my blackberry. I've removed and reinstalled numerous times. Same issues. Gonna give up on Mail very soon if this isn't resolved.

Very strange. I also have IMAP for several servers (none of the Gmail). Mine's been perfect since the lastest OSX update. (Before that, to get it to work, I had to explicitly allow incoming access to Mail on the OSX Firewall, if that helps any.)

Mine syncs, but it keeps telling me that my certificate is invalid. I don't know why, since there's nothing wrong with the other end. I even talked with AOL support, and I'm pretty sure it's a Mavericks thing. A lot of other things have been acting strange since the last update.

First off, I am not seeing this problem in Apple Mail with GMAIL.

I have this problem with Godaddy's IMAP server and Apple's Mail client.

I have yet to upgrade to mavericks. I am still using OSX 10.8.5 aka Mountain Lion.

My Apple email client is version 6.6 (1510).

My problems of late (probably after some Apple Security update):

Unable to automatically sync.

Unable to manually sync.

I have to quit Apple mail and restart it so it would Sync to my IMAP account with Godaddy.

I tried including Mail in the exception list to the Firewall. However, my firewall has always been turned off for other reasons.

John H. suggested turning on "use IDLE command if server uses it" in the Account preferences settings under the "Advanced" tab.

I did just that and I am not receiving in real time email messages to my email account.

That "IDLE command" has now become an important setting I guess. Before I was not even sure what it did.

This may be the result of something chagning with the email server at Godaddy.

I sure hope this continues to work.

I can get email on my Ipad and my Macbook Air with no problems. It is just my desktop, a 2008 Mac Pro, that connects by wire cable that is having issues.

Given all the pages here, this seems to be a prevalent problem.

For me, turning on “use IDLE command if the server supports it” causes other sync issues with GoDaddy IMAP email and does not consistently help with receiving new mail either. You would think that it just wouldn't make any difference, since GoDaddy does not in fact support IDLE, but GoDaddy specifically recommends that you uncheck that option.

I contacted GoDaddy about this bug in Mavericks Mail, but they said: “We do not support the issue as we have limited support for third party clients.” In this case, that's actually valid (althought they should at least be concerned), because what I'm experiencing is clearly a bug in OS X or Mail. (The fact that new mail DOES come in while my MacBook is sleeping is the surest sign that it's a bug.)

I have been having Mavericks Mail.app & Gmail sync problems, like many of you, since shortly after upgrading to Mavericks.

I have 1 Gmail account, plus 2 custom domain Google Apps email accounts.

All accounts connect properly via Connection Doctor in Mail.app, and can send/receive etc. properly.

And all apps do NOT sync mail read/unread status and archived status with both Gmail web interface and iOS mail. iOS accounts sync perfectly with Gmail web.

When I updated to 10.9.2 everything synced properly for a few days, and then it broke again, reverting to the aforementioned pattern.

The only way to get a one-time sync fix was to quit Mail.app and re-launch it.

THIS "BANDAID FIX" JUST WORKED FOR ME:

- Quit Mail.app

- Launch System Preferences > Spotlight

- Uncheck "Mail & Messages"

- Launch Mail.app

Now (immediately after making that change), for the first time, all my Mavericks Mail.app gmails are syncing perfectly when modified on Gmail web, and on iOS Mail.

Obviously, this has a spotlight search implication, as that functionality is now disabled.

It may have other mail functionality impications that I'm not aware of yet (like searching within Mail.app?).

Has anyone else tried this bandaid solution yet with any reports of enduring success in functionality?

I know this post is NOT about Gmail, and I'm sorry to post again here on this, but since posted some weeks ago on this I want to reply and say a couple things.

1) My solution from way back when did not pan out and did last.

2) Csound1, in another thread, which I cannot now find, has likely found the solution to the problem many of us using Apple Mail and Gmail have.

QUESTION: For those of you who are having problems with Gmail properly syncing with Apple Mail (read counts, etc.), if you go to Mail-->Preferences-->Google-->Account Information, what is in the usernmae field? is it your FULL gmail address or just the first part?

When you set up Gmail from scratch on Apple Mail, typing in your email address and password, Apple Mail puts only the first part of your email address as your username (the stuff before the @). In the past, this has worked fine for me using Apple Mail with Gmail, but something has changed with either Gmail, Apple Mail, or both.

You're going to have to go into the preferences and change that.

My advice?

1) Quit Mail.

2) Delete your Google Mail account from "Internet Accounts" In System Preferences.

3) Open Mail, go to Mail-->Preferences-->Accounts-->+ to add a new account, select Google, type your info in, but then go to the account in the list and change your username to your FULL email address.

I think this is probably easiest for most of you, but I did the following:

1) Quit Mail

2) Delete Google Mail Account from "Internet Accounts" in System Preferences

2) Delete Mail folder in ~/Library

3) Restart and then empty trash.

4) Open Mail, go to Mail-->Preferences-->Accounts-->+ to add a new account, select Google, type your info in, but then go to the account in the list and change your username to your FULL email address.

It's not been a problem since. The fact that many people are not having any problem with Gmail whatsoever means it has to be something the others of us are overlooking. I am willing to bet that those who are having problems with Gmail will find that the username for the account listed in Mail for their gmail is not their full email address.

what a pain this is ... I just did the spotlight uncheck mail maneuver and hope it works. it didn't work.

and if it doesn't, I hope someone can figure out a fix and post it.

FriarOP, thanks for your very interesting post. This comes the day after I spent sometime looking at this problem again (having again abandoned Apple Mail for a couple of weeks, while using Airmail - that always syncs correctly). But I want to get back to Apple Mail eventually....

Yesterday I opened, processed, filed, deleted lots of emails via Airmail on the Mac, or iPad, or iPhone, and I monitored what went on on my 3gmail accounts in Apple Mail.

First of all, emails turned up quickly in Apple Mail. There were no 'delays' as I've sometimes seen in the past. Good start. And if I deleted or filed any email in Airmail on Mac, or iPad, the changes were quickly reflected in Apple Mail too. Good, as this is another area I'd previously had some problems with.

But by late afternoon I had about 30 'unread' emails showing in Apple Mail, whereas all of these emails had been opened in either Airmail or iPad. Interestingly, at one point, just one of those emails went 'opened' in Mail. Soon after that a new email came in, opened in Airmail, and it too showed as 'opened' in Apple Mail. But the other 29 still showed 'unread' in Mail. So it's still the same problem for me. (I'm running the latest 10.9.2 with Bob's "uncheck all mail" suggestion). And it fixes itself occasionally on the odd email. So an intermittent problem... Often the worst.

Now, I've checked my gmail settings as suggested by FriarOP /Csound1. And indeed in my Mail-->Preferences-->Google-->Account Information, my username is NOT my FULL gmail address on the first account, it is xxxxxxxxx@gmail.com (as opposed to xxxxxxxxx@googlemail.com). Interesting....

However, in my OTHER TWO GMAIL BASED ACCOUNTS, I have my full email addresses listed as my usernames. And all 3 accounts are misbehaving in the same way. Of the 30 'un read' errors in Apple Mail, these second and third accounts accounted for 7 and 4, while 19 were on the first account. (For info, The second and third accounts are company gmail based accounts, but are not @gmail or @googlemail... They use specific company names, but they are Gmail based accounts, and I am using the full usernames in Mail).

I may make the gmail-to-googlemail change on the first account, because I can, and see what happens...

Adding the @domain.net part to my username on my imap account looks to have had some promising effect. I was able to use the check mail button successfully for the first time in a long time.

This was not with gmail btw, but with sonic.net.

I'll follow up with another post here if automatic mail checking and all the other stuff works as expected.
