why folders disappear from finder sidebar in mavericks?

Why do, for no apparent reason, the folders I have added to the Finder's sidebar just disappear when I open a Finder window?

This is very annoying. Like others here, I have to re-alias everything whenever I bring my laptop into the office. How do user tests miss stuff like this?

Say what you want about Windows, but if it doesn't work straight away, I can always get it to work. With my Mac, everything just works, until it doesn't and I'm SOL. Not cool, Apple. It's the little things that matter.

Have any of the folks posting here tried forcing Finder to restart? I have found that this will restore all the items in the sidebar. Restarting Finder has also worked to fix afew other issues that pop up from time to time.

Finder seems to be pretty unstable even through the last two updates. Icons for sidebar items keep changing too. Sometimes they appear as computers, other times, they appear with the proper descriptive icons.

Next time you lose your favorites, try restarting Finder. Just make sure you are not copying files or doing other tasks that are controlled by Finder.

Forcing Finder to Restart has never worked for restoring the favorites. It's worked for other things but not that. I just don't understand how it worked fine in 10.8 but in 10.9 and 10.10 it fails. I also don't understand how Apple ignores the bug reports.

As for Windows it has it's share of stupidity too. This would not force me to ever go back, especially after using 8 and 8.1. XP is still the best in Windows. You can get down to the nuts and bolts so much easier with out the layers and layers that you have to do in 8 and have to turn off in 7.

I am having this same problem in Yosemite. Items that I've added to my favorites sidebar are disappearing, and I am constantly having to re-mount connections to shared network drives. This is one of those little things that makes a big difference in getting stuff done. I work across 4 different network drives every day and it's seriously annoying to have to re-mount almost every time I want to find a file.

Come on, Apple!

This just happened to me in OS 10.10.4. So this has been neglected at least since last November.

Apple really has a huge number of software issues. Keeps the Apple advisors busy but it's really unfortunate for a company that originally led the way toward user friendly systems. Most Apple application programs are neglected after the initial hype. For example, Pages and Numbers and Safari are inferior to the alternatives for example. Integration of computer and mobiles with iTunes and iCloud is a confusing jumble. We could make a very long list of glitches and frustrations. This will catch up with them sooner or later 😟

This is no surprise. Apple has evolved in a very unresponsive company. Apple provides vanishing little contact information beyond sales and support "advisors" and "senior advisors".

Compare for example the contact information available for Microsoft:

With the contact information available for Apple:

Apple software is unfortunately neglected in many cases. Their whole approach to coordinating computers and mobiles via iTunes and iCloud is poorly designed. The idea that a program called iTunes should be used not only for music but for apps and podcasts and much more is ill-conceived. I personally had major problems with iCloud due to a glitch that I attempted to persuade them to address but to no avail. Pages and Safari are quite inferior to the alternatives. I had no choice but to migrate back to MS Word after using Pages for a period of time. A considerable waste of time for me. It's unfortunate that this company doesn't invest sufficiently in software given its abundant revenues. In the long run their hardware design successes will not likely be sufficient to sustain them unless they attend to software. It's ironic because their original success was based on software that was far better designed than the alternatives at that time.

Completely true. People switched to the Apple software such as Aperture because it set the standard for photo management and a new way of editing. Adobe has now eaten their lunch with Lightroom and the because Apple has said they are done with it. That is just one example.

I find I like LibreOffice better than MS office because of PDF built in and also has a better commenting feel.

A hugely frustrating issue which (I think) started with Mavericks and has not been addressed. I must've added the same folders to my favorites at least 100 times! Very frustrating. I tried to report the bug as was suggested but I couldn't log in! Is this just happening to me or are Apple just fed up with people reporting bugs?!

It is. Here is a solution that works well for your situation: make a folder called 'alias' then inside the folder put all the network aliases in there that you want quick access to. Now drag the 'alias' folder to your sidebar or drag the alias' to your sidebar. If they get deleted from the sidebar they are easy to still have in the folder or copy them back to the sidebar.

why folders disappear from finder sidebar in mavericks?
