There are some catches. FIrst, I've literally had a 50/50 success rate on USB sticks. I once had 14 handy (bad habit of collecting them) and 7 worked, 7 didn't. There was no singular size or brand that worked. A 4 gig lexar did, while a 2 gig lexar didn't.
Ones to avoid do seem to be Kensington an Sandisk, ones that come with bundled software. And I had the best luck with no-name generics.
However, beyond the 'does it work' lotto, photos on the stick must be formatted very specifically. There must be a folder named DCIM. In that folder the photos must have 8 character names, DSC_3984.jpg for example. Just like they'd come out of a camera (that's the reason for the specific naming convention, you're basically tricking your iPad into thinking you're connecting a camera)
You cannot view those images off hte card. Not beyond a thumbnail. You must import them all into your iPad, then you can use the photos app to view them.
So it does work, but you have hoops to jump through. If you pursue it, I'd suggest getting a SD card and using that. SDXC DOES NOT work, but others do. (32 gig or less) And I have yet to encounter a SD card that kicks up the 'device requires too much power' warning that USB sticks do.
Use a comptuer to put the file structure on your card then use that card to import the photos onto your iPad where you can view and delete.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
