When connecting my iphone to my computer, message appears: iphone cannot be used because itunes needs to be updated. I updated on my Mac, but it isn't transferring to my phone. Tried looking at software updates on my phone - "no updates needed"

Okay, at least we know now that you are not using the correct version of OS X. You will have to upgrade that software to be able to use the combination of iTunes and iOS that you are looking for.

I highly recommend you upgrade the RAM in your Mac to the maximum it will hold before attempting to update OS X. 1GB is pushing the lower limits of acceptable performance.

You'd be much smarter to go to an Apple Store. They won't charge you to install RAM that you buy from them. The Geek Squad will charge you just to look at you.
