how to replace paragraph markers and tabs in Pages

The Find and Replace function seems to work only for text. Isn't there a way to replace paragraph markers and tabs? I know Word can do this but can't find it here in the Help area of Pages.

You can also enter \t to find tabs in Pages v6.2 — but the Find/Replace facility is still limited, just like it was in Fall 2013 with Pages v5. You can also Find/Replace any character combination that you can double-click in the Emoji's & Symbols Character palette.

Yes, when you reply to posts dating back three and four years, they do tend to reference outdated versions of Pages.

I would like to use iWork 09 rather than iWork 5 or go back to MS Office, but can I?

I replaced my 4.5-year-old MacBook, which had MS Office 2004, with a MacBookPro and downloaded iWork 5. Terrible.

Many of the eliminated features that you listed -- http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=424&mforum=iworktips ntrick -- are features I want, like replacingt paragraph and tab markers, and it's unbelievable that Pages would eliminate them. I don't have a Pages 09 to update.

Can I obtain iWork 09? Or do I have to buy MS Office?

Thanks for your prompt and thorough information, to my questions and all the others.

I used the Time Machine method to transfer files rather than have the Apple Store do it, and I found that there were no iWork apps on the computer -- not sure why -- so I downloaded iWork 5. This MacBook Pro / Maverick does not have a CD drive. Looks like I would have to get the $80 CD drive to install iWork '09 from Amazon.

(I regret that I bought the salesperson's pitch. I think I should have bought the Mac that was $100 cheaper and not a Maverick -- it had a CD drive and probably iWork '09.)

You can get a quality external Optical drive from eBay that lets you do BluRay, for much less than Apple's.

Or borrow a Mac with a drive and transfer the iWork Installer to a USB thumb drive.

It is good practice to keep all your software purchases backed up onto a couple of cheap USB Hard Drives along with all your purchase details and serial numbers. Apple has just reminded you why.

Here's a possible work around:

Turn on View > Show Invisibles (shift-command-I). (Not needed, but helps to see what you're doing.)

Select the invisible you want to search for, in this case a paragraph marker or tab. Then hit Edit > Find > Use Selection For Find (command-E) to move the selection to the search field. (You'll have to click on the Find Panel to complete the find.)

You can use the same trick for the replace text.

1. Clumsy multi-step procedure with no feedback

2. There is no keyboard shortcut for the Replace with Selection

3. You can't actually see the search patterns you are working on in the Find dialog

4. Each individual change is an Undo after the Search and Replace

5. Waste a lot of time doing it over and over until it final works

To summarise: typical New Apple!
