New Macbook air - battery and mail issues under Mavericks.

Hi,

Had my macbook air for only a few days (just over a week) I used to get battery life of well over 12 hours, but after upgrading to Mavericks I started getting a battery life of between 6 to 8 hours (under 10 at a real push)

I found that mail app had been downloading ALL my old archived mail and had built up about 50GB of mail in it's storage folders for my two accounts.

I stopped using mail app, because it didn't let me select which folders to download, and it didn't support push with gmail.

Since stopping to use mail app, I seem to be getting much closer to 12 hours battery again. Still not a full 12, but a significant improvement from the 6 - 8 I was getting before.

I don't do any significantly intensive taskson it, it's basically just some safari tabs and some imessages.

Activity monitor usually doesn't show any significant;y high usage from any apps. But I do leave it closed most of the time, I try to run as few apps as possible.

Here's my EtreCheck:

Kind Regards

Steven

Stevie:

There is enough to discuss on the basis of this information, but what me worries much is that the free RAM is practically zero and thus a lot of in/outs to disk. You may not notice that in speed since you have a superspeed SSD. Normally this causes kernel panics, crashes.

And only 2.6GB of RAM is accounted for !! you have 4GB !!

So before doing the necessary about the list, I would like to find out what is going on here:

1. Restart while holding the Shift key: you will start in the safe mode. Even with the SSD this will be slow, then run Etrecheck and give me just the last paragraph on Memory, remove the rest from the list (in your post). This boot in SafeMode does a lot of resetting, a small chance that it solves the issue.

2. Then restart normally, and download "Rember" from kelleycomputing.net

Run it, this may take a while, have a cigar.

In the meantime start Activity Monitor and see what it says about memory.

Post the Rember result and Activty Monitor Memory info here too.

--- If we find real problems, no worry, you have guarantee.

--- after this we are going to do the rest.

Rember Test Results

All tests passed!

Total built-in memory: 4 GB

This is the total amount of physical memory that the computer has installed. If this figure is not showing the correct amount of memory there may be a problem with one or more installed DIMMS.

Available memory: 764 MB

Available memory is the amount of physical memory that is currently not in use by any other processes. All available memory will be used for testing when the "All" option is selected. To increase the amount of available memory, you can restart your computer before testing. If you are familiar with the command line (CLI), you can run memtest (the core of Rember) in single-user mode. See Rember help, or http://www.memtestosx.org for more information.

Requested amount: All MB

The total amount of memory requested for testing by the Rember application. Not all requested memory can be allocated for testing. See information on "Available memory" for more information.

Memory allocated for testing: 764 MB

This is the total amount of memory that memtest was able to allocate for testing. See "Available memory" section for more information.

-------

Loops selected: 1

Total loops selected by user for testing. All loops should complete when testing is successful. Test failure when the "Continue on Error" preference is selected will cancel tests before this number of loops has been completed. Users can also cancel testing before this number is reached.

Loops completed: 1

Total loops completed by memtest. Note that the Rember is not always able to identify how many loops ran. If there are discrepancies between this and the loops selected, the log should be examined to determine exactly how many loops were performed.

-------

Total execution time: All tests passed! Execution time: 263 seconds

This is the total amount of time that it took to execute the selected tests. Execution time may vary from system to system, and is provided as a guide for determining how long users can expect tests to run based on the amount of memory installed on the system.

Testing start time: 2013-11-16 06:18:06 +0000

Testing end time: 2013-11-16 06:22:30 +0000

Rember version: 0.3.7b Memtest version: 4.22

Saterday morning !!! Home at last !!!

Mmmm, in the SafeMode all memory is displayed.

The Rember result is not "normal" however.

The Activity Monitor does not display all memory "normal" neither.

Something stinks.

Perhaps, to be sure, you do a SMC reset and a PRAM reset, does not hurt.

Maybe we have to do the cleaning first? Here we go:

1. Uninstall OSXFUSE and MACFUSE both, you can reinstall one, not two, and only when it is imperative to have one.

2. Uninstall NTFS-3G and PARAGON-NTFS both, You can reinstall one, not two, and only if imperative.

3. Uninstall GoPro, you can later reinstall it.

4. Uninstall Plex, you can later re-install, if unavoidable.

Use the uninstallers if available.

If you do not use Teamviewer uninstall it also.

Then Shutdown the mac, and do a SNC and Pram reset again. Then restart, post a new Etrecheck list.

Happy computing!

Hi

:( :( this morning my Mac won't connect to wifi at all. I have some stuff I need to save before restarting, so I'll go plug it in with a cable later and hopefully get online.

In the meantime, how do I uninstall those things? Many don't have apps in launch pad to delete. I can't fine any uninstallers?

I do use teamviewer a lot, but I'll remove it temporarily to test.

Thanks

Steven

The easy way would be to rightclick the applet in SystemPreferences and move it to trasj, but that leaves behind leftovers that you do not want.

In general 1: try to avoid apps that do not have an uninstaller! OSXFuse is not very compatible and causes problems, bad developers.

In general 2: installing two apps for the same thing always causes (serious) issues.

Download an app called Appzapper(I don't know too much about it but apparently it can delete OSXFuse and Macfuse. And probably also the NTFS things Paragon and NTFS-3g (from the SystemPreferences). And GoPro, install it again LATER when you are sure to have a Mavericks compatible release.

Uninstall Plex, it maybe not fully compatible with mavericks, I don't know, if there is no uninstaller (check in the helpfile) use Appzapper also.

These uninstalls are important because they are causing a lot of conflicts. And may be the cause of your Ram issue.

BTW: Instead of Appzapper you can also use Appcleaner and Appdelete (these are not perfect but do more than just moving an app to the trash).

Teamviewer: do you use as client or host (are you using it to enter another remote computer, or are you entered by somebody else)?

Nov 17, 2013 9:35 AM in response to Lexiepex

Hi,

Ar - this thing is getting under my skin now. - I can't find any way to remove plex. I can't find that it's installed, I think bits of it are left behind. I took off the rest as best I could using whatever kind of built in uninstallers they had. some I had to download again because the uninstaller was in the DMG.

Today is the first day I've had this taht I have regretted MacOS. I never used to like it in the past, but I thought it's changed, it's matured, it shoul dbe much better. Today I just want to take this thing back to the store and swear at the clerk - tell him exactly what he can do with his apples.

So I removed as much as I could see how to.

I installed appzapper, but it wasn't helpful as the ones that I had trouble with didn't have app icons in the apps folder.

I use teamviewer for both, to access my computers when I am not at them, and to access other machines to work on them. I have a licence for it, like 4 channels or something, all my staff use it.

I did the PRAM and SMC resets, and my wifi wasn't working nicely after, it was connected, but super slow, high packet loss, couldn't look up DNS. - after changing locations a few times and disabling and enabling it at last I could connect to post this:

Thanks for the help.

Really appreciated.

Steven

Mmmmm, you are not happy with OSX... part or all has to do with installing two softwares for the same thing.

We are going to clean manually, but remember we do not have pinpointed the Ram presentation problem to hardware or software, although I have a tendency to software.

a. we are not going to do anything about Teamviewer, as you do the host and client side (as I do, but I do more with Logmein for very technical controls).

b. remark about LaunchAgents folders:

there are three of them:

Users/yourusername/Library/LaunchAgents/ (I call it: User /Library/LaunchAgents/)

Harddiskroot /Library/LaunchAgents/ (I call it: /Library/LaunchAgents/)

Harddiskroot /System/Library/LaunchAgents/ (I call it : /System/Library/LaunchAgents/)

There are two LaunchDaemons folders:

/Library/LaunchDaemons/

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/

(In /System/Library/ you have to be very careful)

There are two InternetPlugin folders:

User /Library/InternetPlugins/

/Library/InternetPlugins/

when you don't find the entry where I say it is , look in the other one.

1. GoPro: to remove goto /Library/LaunchDaemons and delete the entry beginning with com.gopro

2. Plex: go to User /Library/LaunchAgents/ and delete the entry beginning with com.plexapp

3. I do not now any iGetterScriptablePlugin.plugin, but delete it (maybe install it again afterwards, I think it may be a Firefox plugin) from the User /Library/InternetPlugins/ folder.

4. I do not know if you need the Citrix plugin, but I propose to remove it for now:

go into the User /Library/InternetPlugins/ folder and move the citrix plugin to the desktop.

Restart the mac.

Run an Etrecheck and hopefully the memory statistics are not inconsistent anymore.

The time "remaining" estimate is (just that an estimate) is currently inaccurate in some instances in Mavericks, others report same and much testing on my own of several machines indicate the same.

This however does not affect the ACTUAL battery life.

recommend the free APP called coconut battery and checking via mAh of charge rather than a time "remaining" indicator until this is resolved

http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/

(very small 542KB application, MacBook/Pro/Air, MacOS X 10.5 or higher)

Or can contact Apple for free service and/or in shop diagnostic as you are entitled to same.

Peace
