ios 7.0.4 Update battery issue again!

I just did the update and after I unplugged from charging overnight my battery drained over 50% in a 1/2 hour on standby!!!! Why does this garbage continue to happen? Anyone else having this issue. FYI, before update I had everything turned off to save battery life so no stranger to the ios7 battery issue but thought it was not going to happen with an update.

iPhone 5, iOS 7

Chattphotos,

Thanks so much for your advise, whatever you said is true and works fine for normal working phone. But as what you read from some people's posts, the strange high dain happens weather the phone in use or in standby mode, there is something strange which causes the phone to consume power although it is freshly reset at factory default with no additional apps loaded.

OK Apple staff. Here is your identification of the problem, which will help you pinpoint at least one piece of hardware this problem is affecting.

So that makes me smarter than 99% of your staff I have spoken with so far, as they refute any problems with 7.0.4, and thus you should hire ME instead 🙂

I can save you a fortune in customer loss $$ and misery.

Now, for all you posters, I can now have acknowledgement that Apple DOES MONITOR this thread.

Because they pulled down one of my posts because I badmouthed them.

That post was a test to see if someone was listening. They are. Being a Mensa helps with this kind of stuff. 😁 And general troubleshooting.

So Apple, here is your solution to the problem. I discovered that my magnetic cover will not shut off the iPad 3 properly.

This has been going on since updating to 7.0.4. Before that there was no problem.

Now the ipad gives the audio confirmation that it is shutting off.

But I can peek under the cover to see that it is still ON with screen glowing.

The bloody screen stays ON until the battery dies, sometimes many hours later.

Even though I have it set to autoshutoff after 2 minutes. I have woken up at 3 am to see the ipad glowing from the edges with the cover on.

Cause? The magnetic shut-off has become less sensitive, and only works properly when the magnet is postioned perfectly over the switch.

Even slight misalignment keeps the device ON, and over-rides the auto-shutoff that you program in via Setttings.

Sometimes I will close the cover a few times, each time getting the audio confirmation, but the brick will not shut off.

Therefore I conclude that 7.0.4 has somehow affected the sensitivity of the magnetic shutoff.

Weird, but that is definitely the problem, or at least one of the bugs in 7.0.4.

I am sure there are hundreds of bugs in that release, as it seems to affect everyone differently. But they may have some commonality and origin.

Ditto for my iphone. Same cover, same problem. Maybe THE problem.

So fix it already! Apple staff, thanks for reading. Now get to work!

Apple there is a problem!

Looking at what people are saying I guess some people have faulty devices but most have a genuine issue with this update.

The problem is with the cellular data some where. We have the benefit of many devices in my office which helps pin point the problem. Only devices with 7.0.4 have the issue and only cellular devices, all our non cellular I pads remain unaffected.

On all affected devices turning off cellular data stops the battery drain.

My phone was very kindly replaced by you under warranty but the new phone is just the same.

All our cellular devices use the 3 network in the UK and due to poor signal at our office we connect via a femtocell provided by 3 and we can see the constant cellular usage via this device.

The same battery drain also occurs when we are out of the office and connected to the mainstream cellular network so it is not our femtocell at fault.

Our I T department is currently experimenting with Samsung Android phones and tablets but to be honest Android isn't quite cutting it for us. We are currently managing this issue by turning cellular on and off as required but it is a pain as e-mail does not automatically arrive with us when we are out and about and not on wi fi.

We and I am sure many others would be most grateful if you can get this resolved for us. communication is the cornerstone of our business and for this we rely on you, even on a personal level We have become reliant on the Apple way of doing things. I have spoken to you via live chat which is how my phone got replaced but some of your people say there is a problem but others say there is not.

We'll that is enough moaning for today! I hope someone in the Apple empire takes the time to look at this

Happy new year

Hi Whiller, I've been trying to pin down which devices are having issues and where they are in the world.

The cell network (and signal strength) can vastly determine how good battery life will be on a given iPhone.

I have used 3 (UK/IT/AT) before, but that was in iOS 6 days and the battery on my iPhone 4S would last 15 hours on average.

What set of iPhones do you have?

What data bands are being used? (3G/4G/LTE)

What is the measured signal strength on the problem devices?

Follow this guide:

http://lifehacker.com/5929546/see-the-actual-signal-strength-on-your-iphone-with -this-quick-tweak

-52 to -90 is good signal

-100 to -130 is weak/SMS only signal

Hi there

We'll we have a range of phones 4 through to 5S 5 in my office but more than 30 in the building so it is not just one guy with one phone spouting about the problem. All of us that we're foolish to accept the update have the issue and all go back to normal drain with the mobile internet turned off.

The field test shows 76.3 in the signal field. My phone which is now new drains 18% per hour but will last up to two days with cellular data turned off and all of us are similar.

We are still on 3G as 4G has not yet arrived here as we live on a Uk offshore island.

We have also noticed how hot the phone gets when the data is on and the battery is draining excessively, our IT guys though think it is the processor that is hot not the battery. They also think it is the processor running flat out whilst on cellular that is causing the battery to die. Despite what others appear to have experienced looking through all the posts we have no problems whilst on Wi Fi only.

We have tried setting up a phone as new with no Apps and everything turned off apart from the cellular and it still drops about 18% per hour so we are certain it is not a rogue app transferring data! we are convinced it has something to do with the processor and data.

The guys are looking into rolling back to 7.0.3 which Apple tell us is not possible, I am not sure how they hope to achieve this but we do have some clever bunnies down in the basement and they don't get out much so We are hopeful.

We have suddenly realised how much we depend on this technology and just how much we have taken it for granted.

We will be making some important communication decisions on our return from the Christmas and new year break if we can not sort this.

Your case is unique in that I cannot replicate on-hand in your scenario as the radio technology for the network I'm on is completely different across the pond here in America. (CDMA + LTE)

My friends here on the GSM networks haven't said anything about significant battery life issues.

So, how hot do these phones get?
Where exactly on the devices?

You can reference the areas of the phone on iFixit

Rule of thumb:

4/4S looking at the back of the phone, right half is battery, left half is the logic board.

5/5S looking at the back of the phone, left half is logic, right half is battery.

Plus, it is really weird to have a phone run at 100% CPU while on cellular, it makes no sense whatsoever.

Are there any MDM/mobile device management profiles installed?

(If yes, by what MDM service and what settings are managed?)

Are there APN's set either in the mdm or manually to access 3G data?

Have you talked to 3/Three and/or Apple about the potential for extreme processor usage?

Have you tried an unlocked handset/a different carrier to see if the issue is replicated?

Dec 28, 2013 11:28 AM in response to petefett

Well, I'm not a technician and I don't have the expertise, but I don't think this massive battery drain is exactly related to cellular data being on or off nor with the screen lock option. In my tests, even when cellular data was turned off, my battery was draining as fast as if it was on (iPhone restored as new, no apps installed). My iPad (Wi-Fi only) was also restored as new yesterday and battery is draining fast too; I can't blame it on the cellular data because it doesn't have this feature. By the way, batteries are draining fast even when the screens are off/locked. I still think there is something constantly running in a wrong way because my devices got hotter after the update.

Dec 28, 2013 1:33 PM in response to chattphotos

Hi again

It is all a bit wired I agree.

Right the phones get very hot and to be honest the whole phone ends up hot I guess the body of the phone just soaks up the heat. I am to be honest not sure about MDM and don't know what 3 have on there. I do know people on other networks such as O2 that have the same issue so am pretty sure it is not 3 the network provider besides all of us on 7.0.3 and below are all fine. As for the CPU running flat out we can't be sure but think that is what it is doing.

The other thing we have tried is tethering the phone to a pad or laptop and using the internet constantly via the phone and the battery does not drain any quicker than if it was in standby 18% per hour

MDM would be distributed by IT (ask them about any profiles, they should know what you're talking about)

But there's T-mobile, EE, Vodafone, and Orange networks too 😉 any complaints from those users? or any direct testing?

Get the app: System Util Dashboard

See what it says for processes that are using the CPU and what the measurement of the utilization is.

Dec 28, 2013 9:27 PM in response to chattphotos

Hi again

I will track down someone on EE and enquire. Interesting info from app. Phone battery been at 93% for past 7 hours

Installed app and turned on cellular data CPU use spiking at around 46% but that is not showing in breakdown

Only use showing is user flicking from 0 to 8 % nothing at all under system. The app is showing battery drop of 1% down to 92% in around 5 minutes phone is saying 86 % closed and restarted app and it is still reporting 92% whilst phone now at 84%. Light on femtocell flashing to say in use but it should not be if I turn off cellular the light goes solid green as it should be. Three other phones logged to cell plus 2 iPads all running with cellular on and iOS 7.0.3.

Baffled to be honest,,, the whole body of phone very warm already but can't pin point where it originates apart from it's the back.
