Warning iOS 7.0.4 update bricked my iPhone.

It was plugged in and a pop-up appeared asking to update. I clicked OK and within 1 minute, it flashed a blue screen followed by the 'connect to iTunes' graphic. I'm attempting a recovery now through iTunes and iCloud.

Hi Allan,

As a matter of fact, I do feel better, but not as good as I would feel if Apple were to fix this problem for my phone and a "few" thousand others. The Genius I spoke with at the Apple store on Saturday said that it only affected 1-2% of the 4s's. I ask how many had been sold and he said 50 million. That works out to be 500,000 to 1,000,000. Only a small percentage but it does add up. I still would like to know where Jonathan got his info since he does not work for Apple.

I am not a ranter by nature but this has me pretty hot under the collar.

I have 5 iPhones in my family (all are original iPhone 5). 3 of them updated to 7.0.4 without any problem but the remaining 2 had the same problems described here - i.e. the update failed and the phones were placed into Recovery Mode. It took me a couple of tries to restore them from a backup in iTunes. I rebooted the phones and the laptop I had them attached to (a couple of times) and eventually I was able to restore and update them.

Same here. Thinking I would do the quick update before going to bed tonight and then the update failed and it rebooted into recovery mode. At first, I kept getting an error message on iTunes saying the phone could not be restored. I thought I was screwed. The phone looked like it was on (light black screen). I pushed the power button and that seemed to jolt it. It then showed it was connected to iTunes and it allowed me to restore the phone from the backup I just did 30 minutes earlier.

Pain in the *** for just a tiny update. I'll be sure to wait several weeks next time.

DONT RESTORE THE IPHONE! IT IS NOT NECESSARY! (so far)I had the same issue that is being described here. I chose to upgrade to IOS 7.0.4 and it went through the usual updating process. When I looked back at my phone it had the "plug into itunes" screen showin. When i plugged it into itunes it told me I had to restore the phone. I did what one of the users here suggest and kicked the device out of recovery mode using tinyumbrella http://www.firmwareumbrella.com/. Now it works fine (so far) Apple, something is wrong with this update.

Geez, you really love Apple, don't you Johnathan. Always a chance something will go wrong during an update? That's why Apple tried to talk PC users onto Macs for years, but they can't claim the high ground on this anymore. It's not a small percentage that go wrong - it's significant and has been for some time. For the record, every one of the last 3 major updates (4.x to 5.x, etc) has messed up one of my devices. Apple simply does not have their act together on this and they do need to fix it.

I cant believe this is happening and acceptable by Apple, how is this not news! Perfectly working iPhone 4 killed by an iOS update. Well over an hour spent with Apple on the phone and in the end their explanation was 'A hardware failure triggered by a software upgrade' and now ive to paid $250 for them to look at it?!?! It seems im not alone here, and the fact that we are having to pay for doing things the right way is beyond a joke. If ive to get a new phone which it well looks like I have to after 20 restore tries on 3 different machines all failed with the same error (2) it certainly will not be an iPhone. Appalling mistake, terrible service and no fix available. Dissappointed!

You do have to do a full restore if the update puts you in a recovery loop, like it did for me!! You can use tiny umbrella to get you out of recovery mode but not a recovery loop! The only way to get out of a recovery loop is by puttin your iPhone into DFU mode and doing a full restore!

How to put your iPhone into DFU mode:

1- Connect to iTunes

2- Hold down your power and home button together for ten seconds

3- release the power button but keep holding down the home button until you see a notification pop up I. iTunes that says it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode than you can let go of the home button!

4- Then you just have to click on restore and let it go!

You may have to do this more than once but it worked for my iPhone 5S!

Hi Ryan

Ive spent near 3 days on this just trying to get my phone working after a routine update. I have tried everything from DFU mode restore, tiny umbrella & an advanced restore pointing it to the IPSW but it always fails on the same stage. After 20 attempts of restoring and just trying to get this to work it seems my perfectly working iPhone 4 is now dead thanks to an update. Very angry & dissapointed with this system, new phone it is.

If it wasn't working before you tried tiny umbrella using it will almost guarantee that it will never work again. That program causes more grief to iPhones and the computer you run it on than almost any other thing you can do to an iPhone.

But you can try taking it to an Apple store and have a genius try to restore it. Make an appointment first, however.

I had similar issue. Tried updating to ios 7.0.4 which failed. Phone stuck with 'Connect to iTunes graphic" and coudnt detect it in iTunes or in Device Mngr when plugged into PC (win 7).

Solution:

I was connecting it to a USB 3 port. Try connecting it to all your ports, on my HP Laptop half the ports are USB 3.0, the other half are USB 2.0. Connect to a USB 2.0 port and it worked. iTunes detects the phone in recovery mode and I can rest

Me too. Install failed and left my 5S with a blank, black screen.

However, the phone was still responsive to the power button and when I cycled the power (while plugged into my iMac), iTunes saw the phone was hosed and asked me if I wanted to restore from backup.

It feels like the backup is moving really slowly though. I only bought this puppy about a month ago and I don't remmember it taking this long to tranfer my apps / songs / photos then. We shall see...

What a pain in the but.

Apple, I want some serious SWAG for this. How 'bout a free iPad :-)
