iPad mini retina speakers/volume

I just picked up my retina mini a few days ago and have noticed that the speakers/volume act a little glitchy. For example, I'll be listening to music on Spotify or watching a YouTube video, and all of a sudden (and without any prompting by me), the volume will randomly drop down by about 10-15% on its own. More telling is the "sound effects" volume (e.g., the keyboard clicks): increasing the sound effects volume to max will DECREASE the volume of the keyboard clicks. But then decreasing the volume to about mid range will actually INCREASE the volume (decreasing the volume further from mid range will then decrease the volume until mute, as it's supposed to). So basically, the mid range of the volume scale outputs the loudest volume and the min and max ranges will output the softest volume. This can't be normal, right?

Just wondering if anyone else who got a new retina mini is experiencing any weird speaker/sound issues. As it was just released, I wouldn't be surprised if I got a buggy unit. Or maybe I'm just hearing things.

And I'll note that having never used a mini (only an iPad and iPad 2), the max volume is surprisingly soft. Comparing the same ring tone on my iPhone 5 and the mini on max volume, the iPhone sounds louder (though the mini does produce a tiny amount of "rumble" for better low end sound, I guess). Again, though, maybe mine's just defective.

I solved my issue. Hope my feedback could help.

The English uk Siri voice is muffled.

After contacting the support they asked me to send back the two iPads.

But after more investigation I figured out the bug. I went to settings / general / accessibility / VoiceOver/ languages and dialects / default dialect

I tried to enhanced the quality, but the download does not worked. I changed to Australian English and download the "enhanced quality" it worked (there is a blue scroll bar). Then try again for British English, and this time the download bar appears. And the Siri voice is clear.

I hope my feedback will help.

The two iPad minis I bought a year ago are the best computers I've ever owned (I also have two 2011 Mac minis and an iPhone 5s at the moment). So I was looking forward to the retina iPad mini. Sadly, I'm returning both of them for a refund because of the lower volume and the weight gain (don't believe the reviewers — it's noticeable).

I placed my 2012 iPad mini a few feet away from me and one of the retina iPad minis and played the same song at the same volume. The original iPad mini drowned out the retina iPad mini that was just a few inches away from me.

That said, it's the added weight that tipped the balance. The volume might be a software issue, but the weight gain is a hardware issue. I'll take the lighter weight over the better display and faster processor since the weight is the iPad mini's key selling point (for me at least).

Maybe next year we'll get an iPad mini with a retina display that weighs less than 300 grams. A guy can dream.

I had this same issue and went into an Apple store yesterday to get my ipad mini retina checked out and/or replaced and they gave me a brand new one. I have a first gen iPad mini to compare to and here's what I've noticed:

-In netflix, the first generation is definitely louder, but the sound is more crisp on the retina mini.

-In youtube loaded in safari, the same song played at max volume on both iPads renders almost identical volumes.

My conclusion? This is something software related and now that Apple is aware of the problem, they can work on a fix without recalling all units! Hopefully I'm correct because that will definitely make everyone's life easier -- no extra trips to the Apple store! 🙂

I originally bought the ipad mini retina the first night they went available and I thought it was just my unit but I can barely hear the speakers on this thing. It's embarrassing to even show off my new ipad because the speakers sound so horrible. I'm going to put in a call tomorrow. I am ready to return this thing. I'm also having problems with apps and safari closing at random times. I'm over it.
