iphoto not working after a Mavericks update. Any suggestions?

I have just updated to Mavericks and iphoto has a line through the App saying it is the wrong version.

I then updated the App for iphoto via the App store and it still won't work. Any ideas? I also downloaded the latest ilife from the App store too.

Pretty cheesed off. Any suggestions please?

iMac, iOS 5.1.1, I am using 5.5.7 version of safari.

Note to Old Toad: You get most of the info by dragging the Originals over. However, as you pointed out the event names can get messed up. Also, if you've modified any pictures, those modifications are lost, but not entirely. They are in the Modified tree and can be moved over. You'll have to merge evenrts and the association between original and modified is sadly lost. At least when upgrading from iLife 09...

It is quite sad that Apple hasn't maintained enough compatibility that the upgrade Just Works. 😟

Wrong - the upgrade if does correctly loses nothing - since you are threadjacking a long, confused thread and you give no details of what you have or what you did it is not possible to tell you more than you did something incorrectly because the upgrade process is seamless and does "just work" if done correctly

If you would like help I strongly suggest that you start a new thread with the specific details of what you have and what you did - then your specific issue can be addressed and resolved

LarryHN: The upgrade process is far from seemless when going from 7.1.5 (378) running either 10.5 or 10.6 to 9.5.1 (902.17) running mavericks. I've tried copying the iPhoto library from the old machine in numerous ways, but when I start 9.5.1 it fails to show any of the photos. This despite 3 months of effort by a clueful computer professional. I'll start a new thread, but I'm 100% sure I did nothing wrong and that any of the 6 different ways I copied the library should have just worked. They all failed. Do not blame me for doing something wrong: Apple is to blame here. Copying via the Apple Migration Utility should just work. Copying via dragging the old library on the old machine to an external disk should just work. Copying via rsync should work. Copying from a timemachine backup didn't work. None of these work. This library is 280GB, but even creating a new test library with 2 edited photos on the old machine and trying to get the new iPhoto to recognize it failed. Old Toad's method titled "Starting over from scratch with new library" will copy the photos, but I lose my edits unless I also drag over Modified folder, but that loses the assication between the original and modified photos.

So please, do not tell me that the upgrade is seemless. I call BS on that assertion based on first hand experience. I'll start a new thread on this, but blaming the victim is uncalled for. Apple's upgrade process is simply broken even for the most trivial cases when going from 7.1.5 to 9.5.1.

Old Toad: You posted a long post that started "Starting over from scratch with new library". This post is in error. You lose the photo edits if you follow your instructions of dragging over the files from a 7.1.5 iPhoto. You must also drag over all the folders of Modified to get those, but you lose the history of the edits as well as the association between original and modified, although it appears as if no actual photos are lost, nor the metadata that is stored in the .jpg files that live under the covers in iPhoto.

After submitting my similar problem to the panel late in March (updated to Mavericks and couldn't install update for iphoto) I spent several days and many hours on the phone with Apple going through every ramification of ways to solve this problem including redownloading Mavericks etc. One of the Senior technicians kept mentioning that it might be a network problem which sounded crazy to me as we overcame the same problem updating iMovie. I then made a trip to Las Vegas from Grand Cayman where I was based and tried downloading it there - problem solved! I wouldn't have believed it was that simple.

I find it hard to suggest to users to go to Las Vegas to download Mavericks. And what's to say it will be there and work when you return to the Caymans. Because you know what they say: What happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas. 😁

I agree:) but it actually has worked fine on return to Cayman and here in New York where I am currently. I think his point was that it was just my personal network in Cayman. Maybe just using a friend's network for the download might help solve the problem. I still think it is an Apple problem that needs addressing as it seems to be causing problems for many people.

This may have been already solved by now, I had the same problem so I'll throw my ten pence worth in 😉

Basically I simply went to the app store, looked for iPhoto and clicked install, it intuitively realised that the latest version was for Yosemite and asked me if I wanted to download an older version! Job done, have to say that this was a much easier fix than previous apple updates where you have to search the web for an older version!
