Mac Mini Sound Card.

My Intel Mac Mini's sound card doesn't work. The volume bar isn't displayed in the main bar even when i set it to be. System Preferences- Sound says No Output or Input devices found, and the volume sliders are locked.

What is this problem and how do I fix it?
Thanks.

If you use the Accounts System Preferences to create a new user, then log out and log in as the new user, does the new user have the same problem? If so, then there may be a system-wide problem. If not, then your original user has a preference problem or software issue to troubleshoot. Let us know what you find out from this step and we can try to help from there.

I would still suggest you create a whole new user. This one will have brand-new preferences. It's possible, however unlikely, that both the users on your Mac mini have encountered the same problem. One thing you can try is to reset the PRAM. This will reset the system volume. Restart your Mac mini and hold down on the Apple-option/alt-p-r keys all at the same time. Wait until you've heard the startup chime for the third time (if you can hear them at all) and then let go of the keys. If that doesn't help and/or a brand-new user has the same trouble, then you may need to make an "Archive & Install" of Mac OS X to get all the correct system files back in place.

Hi its me again (under a different ID) . The solution didn't work after all. It worked until a reboot, and now even though the "Search for external speakers" is unchecked, its still the same.

Since then I've ZERO'd the drive, and re-installed, and STILL have problems with the Audio IN. The Audio out seems to work fine right now.

Sounds like lots of people are having problems... could it be a buggy sound card issue in the Mini's?

Update after bringing my three out of eleven DOA-mini's to the Apple reseller: there was a problem with the flatcable being loose on all three machines. According to the reseller that had something to do with the way memory chips are added to the mini. When the technician is not accurate enough the flatcable is getting loose and the mini doesn't 'see' the audio part. Now they are fixed and I will collect them this week.
