"google chrome helper" using too much CPU?

You probably already figured it out, but, just restart your mac to fix this.

I have a question, though. Can you explain why my printer is responding so much faster to the 'Print' command? For nearly six months now, my printer has taken up to three minutes to respond to a Print command. After I checked the 'Click to play' option, it takes less than ten seconds.

I'm with you, Lahovary. I've tried all the suggestions I could find online including "click to play" and disabling the flash plugin. Nothing works. Stupid Chrome Helper just rears its head inexlicably all the time. Even when Chrome is not open. Even after I quit Helper in the Finder. Even after I force quit it. It just restarts and wreaks havoc on my CPU. I keep searching every few weeks for a real solution to no avail. Have you found anything yet?

What OS are you using? I'm having the same issue as you, helper won't go away.

Have had my new computer for about a month.

Last night I made some changes (enabled chat and email notifications in Gmail, which separately required me to permission Chrome to display) and suddenly battery life is at best half what it has been.

I un-did all the settings in Gmail, but it hasn't had any improvement. Typically I'd have my laptop at 50% battery life by end of work day and now it will run out of juice after 4-5 hours tops. Chrome also shows up now under "Apps Using Significant Energy" and in Activity Monitor its average energy impact is the highest app by far (currently at 19, but I've been purposefully keeping only a few windows open).

I'm going to experiment with having Gmail open or closed and see if that makes a difference, but either way I'm very very unhappy...especially after LOVING my new Haswell / Macbook battery love. It's a big letdown and I'm not sure who is the culprit or what to do about it.

Any ideas?

I've done al these fixes and nothing's worked for me. I'm running latest OS on my imac 27" and have for a while now. But it's only just recently that I've noticed, hey, why's my hard drive running-on in the background? Sure enough I check Activity Monitor and there's Google Chrome Helper--over two dozen iterations of it--dominating the top 25 of the list of %CPU. But like I say it's only lately it's been happening.

I am having the same issue, except I am running OS 10.7.5. Perhaps it is a change in Chrome over the past week or two. It just started happening with me as well. I did download a free font from cnet, but I checked no on the applications it asked to install.

Are there cleaners that we can run to optimize performance? Has a malware or a virus attached to the Mac, is it just a Chrome issue? I'm curious to find out if there is a solution and what you all find out.

Not a fix.

That really isn't all that bad.

Have you tried removing extensions and apps from chrome, if you installed any? I found that each extension created a new google chrome helper process.
